Boss CS-3 settings

I just bought a used Boss CS-3 compression/sustainer without any paper work. I messed with it for about 10 min last night. I put the compresser in front of my Boss OS-2 overdrive/distortion. When I tried to turn the leval or sustain up much at all I got some terrible feedback. This is the first time I have messed with one of these so maybe I can't quite get it set right. I've heard you don't want to much or your sound can sound squashed. Any help would be appriciated.

I dont have any experience with a guitar compressor but from my understanding you would really only use it for clean settings on your amp, and for overdriven you only use light amounts as overdrive compresses the sound anyway...but that my unexperienced opinion so take it with skeptecism..

Coincedentally this is the first time ive used the word "skeptecism" in a post on this forum..
