Boss katana...**** bantamps

I tried the boss katana in guitar center and it blew my mind for the money. I previously bought a bantamp and a harley benton 212 for a budget rig, and while the 212 is amazing and i still use it, i cant really recommend the bantamp anymore. Katana just absolutely kicks the hell out of it in terms of clarity. It could do with a speaker upgrade perhaps though...

Buy it and let it break in, see if you still dig the speaker, if not change it. I didn't change mine cause I like how the acoustic channel sounds.

What exactly do you prefer about the Katana other than clarity? Versatility? I was looking at one a while back and that clarity you are talking about, I heard as harshness. But I might consider looking at it again if they've made any improvements over the past 6 or so years.

Edit: Which Bantamp were you using?

Its the clarity, the number of different sounds, the built in effects, the footswitching options, just kind of everything. Ive got a zombie. What i will say about it is its a good compact backup head to bring places in case your big amp goes down.

Re: Boss katana...**** bantamps

“Good backup”. Is that the kiss of death for an amp? You hope you don’t have to use it?

Re: Boss katana...**** bantamps

I'll will say this about the Bantamps, they are useful for beginners. The easy access preamp tube (which by it's very nature as a preamp tube doesn't need to be biased) works as a gateway drug into modding. The variety within the Bantamp line allows for users to figure out what style of amp they like at little cost. The Bluetooth allows you to practice without a band and the FX loop let's you explore your preferences with pedal location. Back in my day you couldn't do that without dropping a months wages working at the movie theater.

But back to Boss. Other than power, is their any other reason to get the 100w over the 50w head?

I need something like this, since I have nothing. Cheesy Squier 10w. I was about to buy Fender something 10w, and a pedal or two-mostly just for slap, I like clean stuff. HELP !!
Yess, total noob. At spelling, too, apparently

Roland/boss made one of the best clean amps ever (jazz chorus) so katana would be a good move. Maybe go fender hotrod deluxe? also, definitely get a compressor, id go tc hypergravity. possibly also a tc spark or a mxr 6 band for some tonal shaping options

Re: Boss katana...**** bantamps

Backup. We're not on the same planet. It's only me, maybe never band, and did you say COMPRESSOR? I'm a noob to guitar, but not compressors. Are compressors compressors? Besides that, I ain't got no trust fund, I'm living on disability and I don't see people throwing in the "pay it forward" pot since 2007. I got a $99 guitar collection, however, a friend is going to donate a PRS. Wrecks the $99 ambition. Let's start over. I was only hoping for a Fender 10w and a pedal that would gimme some slap !!!! Thanks for the thought-very sweet xoxoxo

Excuse the ignorance, but what the hell do I need a compressor for? In case there's a hurricaine in the desert?

Compressors are really useful for clean stuff (especially slap) because they give you some added consistency and punch. Thats why high compression is so popular with bass players. They make loud sounds quieter and quiet sounds louder, decreasing ceiling and threshold for the amplitude of your guitar signal (or any audio signal really)

Thank you! Yes, must have a compressor. I appreciate today's lesson, and you explained it so I can understand. I'll know more about gear than how to play at this rate. And there's no shop to go work in so I can BUY the stuff !! I can see I'm going to have to minimize the household, now that I filled it up. Thanks!
