Boss Metal Zone with Diezel mod, tomorrow.

A guy from a local forum charges 10 bucks to do the Diezel mod to the often disliked Boss Metal Zone. I have one and I hate it.

It's supposed to make it sound like a Diezel amp. Of course that's silly, but the sound does improve... A LOT!

Here's a clip comparing the stock pedal to the modified pedal:

The first setting is the only one that makes sense.

It's not hard to tell that the highs are smoother -the signature MT-2 "bees in a jar" screech is gone!- that it sounds thicker and more transparent, and that it's got huge mids!
It's voiced in a much heavier, yet "natural" way. Wider and more dynamic. Sounds good.
I don't use super saturated heavy sounds like that often, but it's not bad to have a nuke sitting in the pedal board just in case. :D

For ten bucks it can't be that bad! I'll tell you how it is!

Plus, the blue LED is cool!

It does sound a bit better, fuller and less gain or fizziness to my ears.

However, I have to say that the tone he gets at first (stock pedal) still sounds better than what I've heard (or managed to get out of this pedal) from any guy playing that pedal...

Interesting but still not enough to get me to buy one and get it modded...

Re: Boss Metal Zone with Diezel mod, tomorrow.

I tried the Diezel mod, I tried the Killer OD mod, I tried the Marshall mod. In the end, I actually liked the Keeley mod over any of Indy's.

It hasn't been the case with all the pedals those guys work on. In the case of the MT-2 however, I liked that Keeley was able to retain the vocal, (or as Wampler calls it "nasal") quality.

Wampler has terrific mods for the Boss Blues Driver though, that I will give him.

I make it sound kinda like that, with less highs though, you never need them past 12 o clock. But still it has this fake, plastic quality to the sound that you can't dial out. That mod made it dissapear.

I don't think I'd go buy a Metal Zone if I didn't have one already to have it modded.
But since I already do...
Metal Zones can be had for dirt cheap used though!

For only $10, that mod is a no brainer. The difference in the mids was not subtle... he did a really good job with it.

Anything else that you preferred about the Keeley mod instead of the Diezel?
I'm curious.

Different strokes for different folks mate.

The Diezel mod will give you plenty of body, the Keeley gives you that vocal quality that comes through nicely live.

Nothing "wrong" with either of them, just different.

I'll give a big thumbs up to the Keeley Twilight Mod. I use the tri-gain (I think)
mode, It's with the switch all the way right. It makes it a usable pedal agian.
But if that diezel mod comes anywhere near what Keeley does, you'll like it.

Re: Boss Metal Zone with Diezel mod, tomorrow.

I hate the Metal Zone pedal, IMO is one the worst metal pedal ever done (among others of course). But I have read some reviews saying that with the keeley mod (?) becomes a nice pedal. No idea what modification involves but it would be nice if you could do a recording before/after the mod.

Re: Boss Metal Zone with Diezel mod, tomorrow.

Check this clip, Condorito. :D

A stock MT2 side to side with a Diezel modded MT2.

The stock MT2 sounds tiny and raspy, the Diezel MT2 sounds fat and big!
I'll meet with the guy in a couple of hours. He'll have it ready tomorrow.
I'll let you guys know how it compares. But that clip is good enough I think!

Re: Boss Metal Zone with Diezel mod, tomorrow.

cool. looking forward for that review. Cheers compatriota :headbang:.

Re: Boss Metal Zone with Diezel mod, tomorrow.

It sounds better. I listen to some of his "before" clips and think "Why would you use that?" :smack:

Re: Boss Metal Zone with Diezel mod, tomorrow.

And here it is. I've given it a test drive and tried different settings, because the old settings became useless.

It's much different now, smoother. It's a bit thicker but not dramatically so. It responds much better to picking dynamics. With low gain it even does a Texas sound with my Strat! The stock MZ was pure mud with low gain, zero transparency, it sounded the same regardless if you plugged a Teisco or a Suhr into it. This one captures your guitar's sound much better.

It still can't beat my Cube's dirty channel though. I'll only use the MT-2 it if I really need a Metallica kind of sound, compressed, brighter and super tight, or a louder "third" channel for leads. The Cube's Dyna-Amp setting (no idea what it's modeled after) sounds a tad looser but also much, much bigger and warmer. It's better now, but I'm far from crazy about it. Still, worth ten bucks!

Re: Boss Metal Zone with Diezel mod, tomorrow.

Interesting story man, I have a Cube 30 and the Metalzone so love to hear your opinion on this pedal. To me, the Rectifier model kicks the MZ's ass so much. The only good thing I like about this pedal is that it is super tight and gets you old Metallica sound like you said.

On what model do you prefer to add the MZ on the Cube? I've been experimenting other models than the JC Clean and found out the Black Panel to be a little bit Smoother and the Brit Combo to be Super heavy (gain of the amp around 10 o'clock).

Re: Boss Metal Zone with Diezel mod, tomorrow.

I usually played with it in the Black Panel with just a tiny bit of gain, maybe 9 o' clock at most, it sounds thicker and smoother. In the JC mode it was way too clean and sterile, good for Pantera and nothing else. Curiously I only tried the modded MZ in the JC120... They must be doing something right. :D I'll try it on the Black Panel setting tonight.

I always find the Metal setting (5150) heavier than the Rectifier in my Cube though. It's more dynamic, the Rect. sounds flatter to me and too scooped even with the mids cranked.

Re: Boss Metal Zone with Diezel mod, tomorrow.

So, the sound demo demostrates exactly what you perceives with the mod?
