Depends a little on what you want to play...but;

Overall, I really dig the Metal Muff. Why? Great range of gnarly through smooth distortion, good EQ flexibility, just a great sound. You could play a lot with it. I generally haven't done distortion from a box for a while, but I had a friend with one and I was very surprised.

MetalZone, regardless of what the Boss haters say, is a pretty good all around pedal with very good eq options also.

Re: boss mt-2, ml-2 or metal muff

Of all the heavy distortions I have, the Boss Mega Distortion is my favorite. The MD-2 sounds cool with solid state amps and toob amps. The Metal Zone really shines through a tube amp, but takes some twisting of the knobbies to make it sound good through a solid state amp. The Metal Muff sounds better to me through my solid state amp, but I can't really get into it. The RockTron Zombie gets a nice variety of distortion tones, but the fuzziness can't be turned down much; it sounds good with a large speaker cabinet; the description in the ads is pretty accurate.

the ML-2 turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me. boss distortions really sound crap to me. although i like my DS-1 as an OD.

try a Digitech Hot Rod.

Re: boss mt-2, ml-2 or metal muff

I like the metal zone more for unmetal tones but I've only heard them through really bad practice amps or tube amps. It depends on what kinda metal but Digitech has a new Hardwire Metal Pedal and the clips I heard on that I like but that seems to be able to get tight NWOBHM tones or looser DOOM like (not as heavy or fuzzy though guess more black sabbath ish) tones rather then ultra tight scooped modern tones but maybe it can get those too.

i love the nano metal muff, bought it on impulse when i played through it.. it's about half the price of the boss pedals and it's not digital. have a look!

also, get to a shop and have a go on them.. metal stuff's a very specific taste!
