Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor Question

Hello,

Is it possible to use the NS-2 to simultaneously gate both the preamp/amp gain and the gain from an overdrive pedal? Here is my current setup.

Boss Tuner
Boss NS-2
Fulltone OCD Overdrive
Marshall head w/ FX loop

I've read different suggestions on how to wire everything, but to be honest I'm a little dense when it comes to FX chains and I tend to get lost when other pedals (i.e. ones that I don't have) are thrown in to the instructions. Any recommendations on how to route everything in my basic setup would be appreciated.

Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor Question

Try:

Guitar to
Tuner to NS-2 input
Ns-2 send to OCD
OCD to Amp input
Amp send to ns-return
Ns-2 output to Amp return

In the future when you get time effects that you would usually put in the amp loop (delay or reverbs), put them between the ns-2 output and the amp return.

Experiment with the placement of the OD pedal. I think I’d run it in line with the lead going to the FX loop first.

Maybe Fx loop out->OD->rest of signal chain.

Others have provided the answer, but just in case it helps your understanding, in the 4-cable/X-method, you’re effectively treating your amplifier’s pre-amp as if it were a distortion/drive pedal.

Sorry, but I don't quite understand the chain you provided in your example. Can you break down the full chain with everything included? Like I said, I'm a bit dense.

Thanks! This setup works great with my main guitar (also has P-90's), but I'm still having issues with the LP Junior Special. I'm beginning to wonder if I should just take the guitar in to my tech to either shield the pickups or replace them.

My pleasure.

What are the issues?
Do they happen when you’re not playing or just when you are?

I’ll try...without having it all in front of me I sometimes get confused too!!
Guitar->tuner->ns2(guitar in)->guitar out to amp input. (Follow the red pathway).

Amp Fx send->OCD->ns2 blue input
Blue output->amp Fx return.

Try that.

The hum is present when I'm playing, but it's much worse when I'm not playing. I can get it to stop if I stand in a certain spot but we move around quite a bit in a live setting. There are lots of pauses in our songs which makes the hum very noticeable in my opinion.

A few ideas:
- The gate should not let sound through if you’re not playing, you could try playing with the threshold of the gate to make it happen.
- In between songs you could lower the volume.
- EHX’s hum debugger is great to get rid of hum (not hiss/noise).
- You could also try a Kinmam Noiseless P90.

It might pay off to check the guitar wiring. Hum might also be due to grounding issue (shield or bridge). Does the hum change when you touch the strings?

Also, check your pedals connecting them one at a time and trying them on and off. Some pedals hum more than others.

Re: Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor Question

Sounds like maybe your guitar is so noisy you would need a gate before distortion. IDK... Getting it checked seems like a good idea.

Re: Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor Question

I see the wiring and I have tried it in the past with poor results.
The way I run my Noise gate is
GUITAR>>>>INPUT OF NS2>>>>>>SEND>>>>FIRST DRIVE PEDAL, NEXT DRIVE PEDAL AND SO ON ALL FRONT EFFECTS>>>>>>>>RETURN>>>>>>OUTPUT>>>>>FRONT OF AMP.
so with this wiring your looping in all your front effects. So whatever you would have built for your front end like drive pedals OD distortion etc, then loop it through the Gate then out to the front of your amp.

I don't run any gates in the effects loop. I run a Volume pedal,Chorus, delay and reverb in there in that order so I can control the volume without effecting gain.
This for me is a very quiet setup as my amp (Krank Revolution 1) doesn't make a lot of if any noise. But some of my guitars do( Charvel So cal with Distortion pickups) and Drive pedals ( Wampler Tripple Wreck).

This is removing my ES-5 which I use Loops to do all this work. I share some loops and have the noise gate in line with signal flow where as if it wasn't there.

Just making sure I understand the chain you provided. Is this correct?

Guitar to tuner in
Tuner out to to NS2 in
NS2 send to OD pedal in
OD pedal out to NS2 return
NS2 out to amp input

So guitar to tuner in

Amp send to OCD in
OCD out to NS2 return
NS2 out to amp return

Right?

Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor Question

Looks right...
Like I said, it’s not right in front of me so it’s sometimes hard to visualize.
Basically run a line out from the Fx loop and connect it to anything that needs gating. Then lastly connect those pedals to the ns2 blue pathway (from the diagram i posted).
That will gate the Preamp noise plus any gain pedals.
The red path will gate any noise from the guitar’s signal path.
When I used to have my JVM, this was my setup, but iirc I had to experiment to get it right.
Just logically think it through as you make each connection.
TBH, I can’t remember if the OCD should go in the amp Fx loop pathway or the guitar pathway.
Now that I’m thinking it through, it is probably better in the guitar path, otherwise you’d be sending a od pedal through the Fx loop and generally that’s not a desirable sound.
Just put the noisemakers before the ns2. A noisegate can’t quiet a pedal that comes after it....

Re: Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor Question

So guitar to tuner in
Tuner out to NS2 in
NS2 send to amp input

Amp send to OCD in
OCD out to NS2 return
NS2 out to amp return

Right?
No.

Guitar >>Tuner In
Tuner out >> Ns2 in
NS2 Send >> Gain pedals
Gain pedals out >> Amp Input

Amp Send >> Ns2 Return
NS2 out >> delay/reverb in
Delay/Reverb out >> Amp Return

That will help remove noise from your od/distortion pedals & your amp' preamp, without messing with the delay/reverb fading out normally. The input of the NS2 senses the guitar signal to open/close the gate effect, you can put your gain pedals there but it will affect the effectiveness of the gating effect kicking in.

Re: Boss NS-2 Noise Suppressor Question

Wouldn’t the gain pedals need to go before the ns2?
It cant gate what it doesn’t “see”.

Nope. With the X pattern, you're gating from the guitar level signal and all filtering comes in during in the second stage. It helps if you imagine the stompboxes as part of the same sound stage as the preamp.
