BOSS NS-2 vs MXR SMART GATE

Re: BOSS NS-2 vs MXR SMART GATE

all noise gates have a negative effect on tone so I would stay away from all of them if I could that said in my high gain days (and I mean REAL high gain) I used a Boss NS-2 every once and a while...not to bad but like I said, they will all kill your tone a little.

Thank you Sir! :beerchug:

Not sure why I bother posting threads; I should just PM you :D

Re: BOSS NS-2 vs MXR SMART GATE

I never tried the MXR but the NS-2 served me well in my thrash metal days. I now do lower gain hard rockin stuff and i have since removed it from my rig since its not so essential anymore. Still, if you need one, for the money i recommend the NS-2. When tweaked right it does work very well.

I'm trying to figure out what Terry wants with a noise gate. :scratchch

Re: BOSS NS-2 vs MXR SMART GATE

I haven't tried the MXR, but I do currently have and use the Boss NS2. I play alot of high gain stuff, and it doesn't squash my tone as badly as some have you beleive. When it is inactive, there is no noticeable change in tone. Maybe others have set it in a way that it is active all the time, therefore squashing their tone? I dunno. I have mine set up in a way that it is only active when I stop playing or pause to filter out any backgrounf noise or hiss. I've been very pleased with the 2+ years i've been using the NS2 and have no problem recommending it if you play loud or use alot of high gain.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I don't. I was just reading up on a few pedals & was curious about these.

No need for one...just curious :D

Re: BOSS NS-2 vs MXR SMART GATE

The MXR is garbage, it WILL change your tone. The NS-2 is a pretty transparent pedal that works well. I liked mine about as much as the ISP Decimator I have on my board now.

A good noise gate that is set properly will not kill tone or sustain, but the older pedals like the MXR give noise suppressors a bad name. I like having mine for noisy venues, my actual rig is pretty quiet. When I had noiser amps like the H&K Triamp, that's where the pedal really got a workout.
