Boss PS-3 Mode 11

Is it worth it buying a Roland EV-5 just so you can have fun with Mode 11 - Whammy - type effects?

I really like the Whammy pedal effect (as usually employed by Satriani and Vai ... NO Tom Morello) and recognize Boss, even with the PS-6, could never sound as good. But I was hoping it will sound OK to justify the cost of a relatively expensive expression pedal.

From the demos, I do think it's a lot of fun. Too bad I wanted something with a delay (mostly to thicken up my solos), so I won't invest in a PS-6 just yet. Maybe we I get back to practicing Vai's "I Would Love To", I'd pull a trigger on a used PS-6 for harmony.

I have the PS-3 aswell, I use it for long-ish delays and I also have the new Whammy 5.. YES Tom Morello!

Anyways they really don't compare, the PS-3's pitch shifting is very glitchy in comparison to the Whammy so you might be better off saving up for a Whammy 5 (the 5 is true bypass, has chord and classic switch and has more options on it) the PS-3 is good if you want the glitchyness though but they are quite different. I say use the PS-3 for its wicked rising and falling stutter pitch shift or its great delay and get a whammy new or used, there is a reason many artists use them, they are amazing musical tools..

I've been playing quite a bit with the PS-3s delay and it's great on it's own, but... When I put a distortion pedal before it, it doesn't sound as good. Is this expected?

I might just score a Whammy 4 for cheap one of these days. I don't want to pay that much for a brand new Whammy 5, when I would only seldom use it.

I use mine with Overdrive and fuzz just fine it does add a bit more treble but I find it makes my delay parts cut through more which I like. The whammy 5 is quite expensive I agree but it is truly an amazing pedal and has that wow factor when looking for something cool to add to your music. I see the whammy 4 used for as low as 80 bucks online so keep an eye out!

I recently started using the whammy with the 2 oct up setting with the pedal in the down position so I kick on the switch to get screeches at random parts of songs or riffs... very cool!

Yes, it adds a little too much treble for me. I'm a fan of warm delay (I like my Garagetone Axle Grease), and the PS-3 was surprisingly not too bright on its own. I like it a lot clean actually. But after I stomp on my dirt box, it seems to go hifi. Not ideal for thickening up single notes for guitar solos -- which is where I want to use it mostly.

I definitely would. \m/

I might get a good deal for a Roland EV-5 though. So I might go for it and see how the whammy effect is on this PS3. Hopefully, it won't suck and won't be too thin and bright. I'd be using the whammy effect under high gain.
