anybody here mod their sd-1? what mods do you guys reccomend?

i just did my first one. it's on a 1981 w/ NEC chip. i put in a socket and a stacked burr brown. i also put a super bright LED (yellow).

i don't trust my ears yet....but i want to like it......the original had good gain, but the tone was midrang-y.

i' prolly won't change anything else on this one. maybe i'll get some newer ones and go nuts!

Re: BOSS SD-1 modding

Never done any mods but I wanna grab an SD-1 for modding in the near future (seeming I don't have any overdrive pedals) alot of the Indyguitarist (Wampler Pedals) mods are cool but you have to buy the DIY book to do them. There is a few cool ones online I just searched SD-1 mods the other day and found a blog where a guy did a mod then made a clip then another mod etc to show difference.

This is a demo of the Gearmandude doing a shootout between a mod done by Machine Head, which I'm not familiar with, called the cutlass mod and the standard. Personally I like the standard. This mod sounds great, but it's a little much for me coming out of an OD pedal.

I own the standard and I'm not really in the mood to change it. I've only had it for a few months, but I can't find anything about it I don't like. Except for, perhaps, that the drive and volume knobs really don't do much in between the 9-12-3 o'clock settings. If there is a mod that can fix that I'd like to hear it.

Just found this video, I really think this is cool. Probably a bit too much for me to handle on the modding side, i'm quite the novice. It turns it into a Full Tone Fulldrive 2 clone.

Re: BOSS SD-1 modding

The Monte Allums GT mod worked WONDERS for my SD-1. Seriously, it turned a five-year old pedal I never used into one of my top 3 pedals. Plus, he's a really cool guy, and his mods are well-documented and pretty easy to pull off.

I learned right away that I like symmetrical clipping better than asymmetrical. If I remember correctly, you can get that by removing D5 or D6, but I think it's a better idea to install a switch. In case you don't know, Tubescreamers use symmetrical clipping, and the SD-1 uses asymmetrical.
