Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

Diminished Triad

Expensive! But finally Tom Sholz and Gibson reached terms and will soon release what they are refering to as, "Collector's Choice™ #10 Tom Scholz 1968 Les Paul."
I will do what I can to have one of these rare guitars.......but like another guitar from one of my favorites, Peter Frampton, it's hard to pay so much money because of the name associated with the guitar. Then again, when it comes to Boston and Tom Sholz, they shaped rock and roll history and put out some of the greatest sounds and albums ever.
One day I hope to own both the Frampton signature guitar ('57 Les Paul) and Sholz's new signature guitar ('68 Les Paul). Whether I end up with one or both, I am very glad Gibson and Sholz are reproducing his legendary guitar!

Sorry man, but I don't get that Tom Sholz "shaped rock and roll history". He had one sound, (ultra-compressed, ultra-processed at that), and 20 variations of the same song. Nothing he, or Boston did, is still on any of my playlists. Sorry. :dunno:

He is a great melodic player and writer, as well as a sound and mechanical engineer. AFAIC that makes him far more worthy of a sig than a pile of other folks who get a sig, like that Grace potter chick, Dave Grohl, billie joe three chord, or the singer(???) from Soundgarden. Boston is still a mainstay of classic rock radio, as much as ACDC or Lynyrd Skynrd is..nearly 40 years after their debut. That is pretty impressive whether you personally like him or not ( and FWIW, I cannot stand him from a personal POV as his political views are diametrically opposed to my own)

Goodness. Tom engineered and produced the first Boston album...in his home studio, on tape. I don't think the reality of that is understood by the majority here. It is a feat of perfection from a production standpoint even today. The unique layering of guitars and vocals was a signature expression. Plus like it or not Tom had his OWN sound. It was his and he created it with tools he engineered and built. But sure, that happens everyday . Not to mention his inventive skills of the Rockman and Power Soak. The Rockman was the first 'pod' of its kind. I can think of few guitar players who deserve this more. Tom is a Legend, he has my ultimate respect regardless if I listen to Boston... Oh, not to mention the songwriting (Platinum albums sales with nearly every song from the first album still in rotation today), plus his guitar part crafting skills. Again... It baffles me that more people under value the reality of doing what Tom did. Most of us on this forum could live 2 lives and not contribute to the movement of guitar playing and guitar production to such a degree. Good on you brother Tom.

Wow...Gibson really needs some help with these signature guitars.

Tom Scholz...really?!

I'm a Boston fan and this doesn't even get me warm and fuzzy. It does have a bit more historic and musical validity than the Chad Kroeger model. I think Gibson really scraped the bottom of the signature barrel there.

Surprisingly the Chad Kroeger model's functionally is a lot closer to something I would play and the finish is beautiful. I just could never own a Nickleback guitar.

Looks really nice, but I wouldn't pay that just for a BFG with binding.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

Well, it did take Gibson more than a decade to notice 7 string guitars exist. That kinda gives away the width of their vision.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

Sweet babies, Gibson is on a roll this year with signature models.

I still think a Thomas Erak Signature guitar or a Brent Hinds Sig V would be pretty cool.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

In crude business terms, a signature model instrument exists to cash in on the popularity of a particular artiste.

There are three good moments at which to offer a product of this type.
1) While the artiste in question is at the peak of his or her popularity.
2) On the anniversary of some highlight of the artiste's career.
3) On the wave of sympathy soon after the artiste has died.

I think of Tom Scholz as a recording studio wizard rather than a stand out guitarist. He is/was notorious for his dislike of live appearances. From this standpoint, TS does not even need a precise replica of his #1 as a backup for stage work. That leaves Boston tribute bands and collectors with an eye for a future rarity.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

I think you could get Tom's sound with an Ibanez RG and some hot Dimarzios. It's not like you NEED a Les Paul for his thing.

I really don't get this one.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

I like how it looks and the Hum/P90 setup, but a Collectors Choice edition? Like someone already mentioned, it's a BFG with binding. I don't see anything there that's going to validate the $6k to $8k price tag it will carry. Of course I've never understood the pre reliced signature guitars anyway. Cool for collectors w/ more money than common sense I guess.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

^^ +1 - P90/humbucker combo and natural finish cool. Interesting that they use hide glue and aluminium tailpiece - should appeal to cork sniffers :P.

Hell yeah I'd rock that, after I changed out the truss rod cover!

Not a big fan of the HB/P90 combo look. Looks unnatural to me.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

i like the guitar.

didn't tom sholz have to build most of his own recording equipment just to be able to record "boston" back in the early 70s?
considering some of the players that have signature models, i'm surprised anyone would have a problem with this one...

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

It's basically just a BFG without the weird top finish, with binding, and the crap beat out of it.

For like 4 times the price.

I'm not impressed.

Re: Boston's Tom Sholz and Gibson releasing signature guitar

Ig was originally a goldtop that he sanded down....I wonder if it has the huge chunky neck that his original apparently has as well.

Can't believe the hate for Tommy boy having a signature guitar (although I agree these type of prices are ridiculous for any guitar) and not to mention ANY sig model is just a (insert any model here) plus or minus a few features.
