Bought a new acoustic..

So after a few weeks of looking and playing and looking some more I decided to buy a new acoustic. My old Takamine GS330S was a decent guitar but certainly doesn't stand up to the higher end offerings out there. I played a range of guitars from Takamine, Bourgeios, Epiphone, Gibson and Taylor as they were all offered by my local favorite shop.

I was basically looking for something with a lot of low and mid tones and not a lot of glassy high end. Right off the bat Taylor was out of the question as everything they make seems to be very bright. I tried a lot of different wood combo's on the Taylor's and even the combo's that should have made the guitars darker came up too bright in comparison to other makes.

Next up was Takamine, I loved my GS330S so I figured I'd give thier higher end guitars a shot. Their high end line was great but seemed to be missing something, almost like they felt cheap in comparison to the other guitars. They had the sound I liked but didn't grab me right off the bat so I moved on for now.

Next were the Gibson's, I dug the J-45 Rosewood and the Advanced Jumbo but sort of prefered the AJ a little more than the J-45. The AJ has a ton of bottom end and is just articulate enough on the top end to sound good but not glassy, color me impressed by this guitar. After I quick QC to make sure everything looked goo, this guitar was #1 on my list.

I moved on to a couple of Epiphone Masterbuilt guitars. Great tone, nice craftsmanship but what a horrible, horrible neck profile. I'm not sure where these neck profiles came from but they could the worst I've ever felt, they're shaped like this \_/ and just don't feel good at all, so I moved on.

Last were the boutique Bourgeois guitars which are modeled after Martin's. I tried a Country Boy and Vintage D. Both are works of art, Bourgeois reminds me of PRS in many ways, top quality materials and craftsmanship. Both played and sounded great but the rosewood back and sides of the Vintage D gave me more of the sound I wanted over the Mohagany of the Country Boy. Then I saw the price tag, $3850 for the Vintage D, I understand that quality comes with a price but I couldn't justify that kind of money on an acoustic. I only play acoustic maybe 10% of the time that I play guitar and nearly $4000 for one made me want to cry.

That pretty much left me with the Gibson Advanced Jumbo. After played some of the other guitars again, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. It's a beautiful guitar with rosewood back and sides and a spruce top. Like I said above it has a booming low and middle section and just enough high end to make it all come together. The guitar projects sound like nothing else I've played and plays almost like an electric, I think if the strings were lighter it would. After a quick restring with a set of John Pearse strings, it was on it's way home with me. I figured that if I was going to spend some good money on an acoustic I may as well do it right, get what I want and be done with it and I can say that the AJ makes me very happy.

Here are some pics but they aren't the best as it's tough not to get huge glare off of it.

Awesome. I'd love a J-45 someday. But that is tasty piece you got there....

Re: Bought a new acoustic..

I'm curious why your local shop did not offer Martin guitars. I have an old takamine guitar as well and i love it, but hopefully someday i will own a dc15. I've tried it out and it sounds soo warm and dark. I love it.

I'm not sure really, there may already be a Martin dealer in the area, one of those exclusive things. I know they wanted to get Fender in there but another dealer up the street is the Fender dealer for the area.

The owner is in Texas at NAMM this weekend trying to pick up a few more boutique brands. Boutique guitars are nice but they tend to carry a hefty premium.

Re: Bought a new acoustic..

I own and play a lot of acoustic guitars. My main acoustic is a Santa Cruz OM, and when I need a bigger sound I have a Santa Cruz Tony Rice model. IMHO the Santa Cruz guitars are some of the best Martin style guitars made today. That said..........the best Acoustic I have ever played was a 1936 Advance Jumbo. What a huge sounding guitar that was. IF my memory serves thats a Mahogony back and sides guitar right? Mahogony is a great choice for a large guitar. It offers really good balance from string to string......... Good luck with it.... its a great guitar. Have you givin much thought to what electronics you might put in this fine guitar?

Actually it has Indian Rosewood back and sides. There are some special order models out there with mahogany or maple backs and sides but the 30's models came with rosewood.

As far as electronics, no I haven't really thought much about it. It's more or less just for playing around the house or with friends, I'm not gigging a this point. I'm sure sooner or later I'll get the bug and want some sort of electronics but I'm really not even sure where to start.

Re: Bought a new acoustic..

Wow... cool guitar bud. I looked for ages to find an acoustic(eletro) that I liked. I tried lots from cheap far eastern mfrs to high end ones. I'm not an acoustic player, I've got too many bad habbits now after playing electrics for 20 years or so, so I wanted something that felt like an electric but had a big warm sound. I found one, it looks a bit too dressed up but fit the bill perfectly for me at least... it's a Yamaha CP15ea. The acoustic sound is good and so is the amplified sound, the only thing I can fault is that it's a bit neck heavy. It has a really nice mahogony neck that is just oiled (I think) but it is obviously a heavy piece of wood. The sides and back are sort of quilted mahogony and the top is spruce. I use a suede strap if I'm standing and this cures the problem and there's no problem if seated. To be honest I only noticed when I tried using a cheap strap that had a shinny plastic material back. It is ok for what I use it for, but I really would like either a J45 or a J200... but they were more than I could both afford and justify! Yours looks superb... I'll bet it sounds BIG and warm. Nice one bud.

Take a look at these sites. It will help you get an idea out of flexibility

Acoustic pickups are like guitar in the sense that there really is no best, it just depends on how much you want to spend and what works best with your style of playing and your style of music.

I have 11 Acoustic guitars, only one can be plugged in and a hardly ever plug it in. IMHO the best acoustic sound is with a good quality mike running into a good PA. That said I understand how unforgiving this can be if you perform and move around a lot. When I play acoustic I usually play seated and rarely even put a a strap on the guitar, but thats me... if you are planning on gigging and playing with a loud band these pickup systems will be a bid advantage, but as I said they all sound less like the guitar than a good mike. This is not to make you think that they sound bad, they just don't sound as natural as the guitar does. I have had a lot of experience with the Fishman Eclipse and it really works well. The LR Baggs is also a really good system. The Shertler system I have no hands on with, but there are a few well known people who prefer them ( John Jorgenson for one). Bottom line is do your research and buy what will work for you.

I haven't worked with the Duncan Mag mike system either, but the few people I know who have said it works great. When they first came out I had asked here for any feedback, but at that time it was fairly new. Looks like a decent choice if you don't mind having a pickup in the soundhole.
