Bought a Swamp Ash Les Paul Studio!!

Bought it yesterday. How manly, my first Gibson! Good thing I had last night off work due to the holiday because I've been playing it from 8:00 last night until 3:00 A:M Tuesday. I went to the store Monday afternoon with every intention of getting a Les Paul. Tried 3 Studios: a Red Wine and 2 black ones. Great guitars, not a thing wrong with them. But you know, something just was'nt there. It was then that I happened to notice the swamp ash Lester. Never saw one before so heh, why not. Within 30 seconds I thought, "uh-oh, this is already feeling too good." Played it for about half an hour before I plugged it in and once I plugged it in well, that was that! The sheer simplicity of this guitar is what makes it (for me) so drop dead gorgeuos. Like a woman who does'nt need any makeup because it would spoil what's already perfect! Swamp ash body with a swamp ash cap, mahogony neck with (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) an ebony cap. If this is rosewood it has got to be the darkest rosewood top I've ever seen on a guitar neck. No markers on the neck, but on the top side. A tad darker sounding then a maple cap Lester but I like having something that instantley has it's own identity. But it's not muddy, far from it. It definatley has it's own mojo. The bridge pickups sounds great. Very, very balanced with just the righ amount of all you need. I can't believe how beautifully the tone stays when you roll the volume back, even with distortion going. Better than any guitar I've owned so far. The neck pickup seems like it might be a bit dark for my liking but then heh, I just bought it so I'll give it a fair chance first. This is the first guitar I've owned with two volumes and two tones and I'm already loving the possibilities using the two pickups combined then playing with the volume controls. First guitar I've owned with an arched top also, so the feel is definatley a bit differant for me. All in all I'm very happy that I spotted this little gem when I did. Very thrilled with my purchase. I've got about two hours before bed so if you'll excuse me..........

I like the way these look too, but have never tried one out. They have a mahogany neck with an ebony fretboard.

Re: Bought a Swamp Ash Les Paul Studio!!

Theres nothing quite like a first timer les paul purchase...especially when it blows you away!

Congrats man :D

Thanks, guys. Sorry, I can't post any pics because I don't have a camera. Hey Bob , did you get yours yet? Last week you said you bought one from e-bay.

Re: Bought a Swamp Ash Les Paul Studio!!

I love the look of that guitar! I actually started a thread about it when they first came out ... One day I will own a Paul!

Re: Bought a Swamp Ash Les Paul Studio!!

I like used beat up guitars. My acoustic has a hole in the side of it where my dads motorcycle fell on it... hard to beleive thats all it did.
I also like the way the swamp ash looks..... maybe I will own a new guitar some day hehe

Im gonna try and get a pic of it :laugh2:

I love swamp ash. It's so tight and well defined.

Re: Bought a Swamp Ash Les Paul Studio!!

Congrats on your latest purchase, in some instances the Studios are underrated and just as good as the Standards. I have always found them to be really nice and they tend to have that dark, low end voicing. I like the middle position with the neck V on 5/6, the bridge V on 7/8 and the tone controls around the 3/4 mark - great "woman" tone and with the bridge pup giving you just enough bite. But experiment with all the choices you have and see which ones suit you best!

Re: Bought a Swamp Ash Les Paul Studio!!

I have wanted to try one of those.. Les Pauls rock and with a swamp ash body I hear it's not so damn heavy.. I love the ebony board on any guitar as I think they help with sustain and chord definition personally.. I also like maple, but rosewood is almost too warm or generic sounding for me.. Just a personal thing.. So how heavy is she? I always measure this by weighing myself then step on the scales with the guitar and subtract my original weight.. I'm curious if you don't mind..
Thanks
Tim

Re: Bought a Swamp Ash Les Paul Studio!!

What I want is a mahogany/maple les paul but with the same finish which is on the ash les paul.

Re: Bought a Swamp Ash Les Paul Studio!!

Tim: I put the guitar on my scale at home and it weigh's 9 lps. It sure does'nt feel very heavy to me. The bridge pickup has GREAT definition. I don't know if this is due to the ebony or the combination of all the wood's. The more I play and look at it the more I like it.

Don't overlook the thinner finish.
