Actually, the Dumble that SRV used was a Steel String Singer, not an Overdrive Special. Based on a quick read of the manual, I'd say it's that the Boutique clean is based on the SSS.

Actually Stevie used both of the above mentioned Dumble amps...the first one was a borrowed Overdrive Special (borrowed from Jackson Browne) then he bought a SSS for himself.
As for never trying a Dumble it's pretty tough...they are hard to come by and cost more than a decent car! I got the chance to play through an Overdrive Special some years back at a guitar show and I have to be honest I was far less than impressed...so me guys really like those amps but I didn't care for it at all really.

There's a good chance that you won't necessarily dig the tone of a particular Dumble, especially ones that are available. Dumble voiced each amp specifically for the needs and style of its intended owner so there's quite a bit of variance in the tone from amp to amp. I would suspect that the ones that really work for most folks are in the homes/studios of the likes of Carlos Santana and Jon Mayer.
To my knowledge, the best place to try out a Dumble is Ultrasound Studios in NYC. They have a few including one that's reputed to be the reference amp for a number of Dumble clones. They're not for sale but are made available for comparison with other amps that they do sell.
It wasn't a bad amp perse but I just felt like for the price being asked it could have been a good bit better, I also feel like I have played through and owned lots of amps that were as good if not better than cost far less.
