Bravo EMG

Man... I've never been a fan of EMGs. The 81, I never understood why it was so popular? It always felt like an explosion of sound in all directions and was scratchy. The 85 Felt better but was still lacking. I never liked either in the neck. The 60 felt like a lower output 81. The S and SA, just lacked everything.

A while ago, going against my gut, I ordered the 57/66 set to put into a Squier Active Contemporary Strat. Dude, its been great! Pickups sound clean and crisp and feel like active pickups (that little bit of extra boost) but they sound like any passive set. I actually like the boosted feeling. It make me wonder if EMG could make more pickups like the 57/66 set but with different voicings- maybe even something in the single coil realm. Anyhow, I see many posts about a pickup not working well in a given guitar and wanted to share my praise of them working well. has anyone else tried the 57/66 set? anyone ever try the 57 in the neck? I'm curious now.

Re: Bravo EMG

I have the 57/66 set in a EPI SG, they do sound pretty good. Not sterile like the 81 set. They are supposed to be super quiet, but mine aren't for some reason.

Re: Bravo EMG

If I could afford it, I'd build a neck through superstrat with a Floyd and an 81. One volume.

Re: Bravo EMG

Have you had a chance to try any of the Retroactive sets to compare it with? I know they try to do a similar thing (active pickups that sound and feel passive) but I've never had anyone compare them given the limited number of people who have experience with both sets.

Re: Bravo EMG

I really want to try a Fat 55 neck & Hot 70 bridge. I think it'd be a good combination, if they balance well.

There was a guitar that came standard with that set if I remember correctly. Those were the ones I were thinking about as well.

Re: Bravo EMG

That is a great set from EMG! I really like the way they sound in my buddy's E-II Horizon. I have an E-II Horizon NT-7B that had a set in it. They sound good here too, but I decided to make it passive and pulled them. I would put them back in if I made it active again.

A pickup that i just tried from EMG is the 58 and it has become my new favorite neck pickup from EMG. Just an all around great sounding pickup, and it matches well with the 81.
