Breakin' In Speakers

Just got myself a Traynor YCV20 (Blue), best purchase I've made yet for guitar. You know that feeling when you've make some bad purchases in the beginning of your GAS journey and you're stuck with 'em for awhile cause it's not like you can go out and drop another 700 bucks on another amp? Now I think I can appreciate the learning curve a bit. I love playing through this thing, I really feel the notes because they actually sound good. I can't wait 'til it sounds even better once my speakers are broken in. Which brings me to my question, what's the procedure for breaking them in? What do you guys know about this? I'm figuring I just crank it and play alot, but does anyone have an estimate on how long it takes to do it. Can it be done with a low volume?

Re: Breakin' In Speakers

Some people use a small transformer to drop 60 Hz AC line voltage to a level that won't burn up the speaker, but you need to know what you're doing.

Other might just plug a CD player into the amp, turn it halfway up, throw some blankets over it, and leave it playing in the garge for a couple days.

I say, play it... secure in the happy thought that what is good will only get better.

Re: Breakin' In Speakers

i run music thru it quietly for a few hours, then a little louder and bassy for a few more hours, then loud for a day or so. seems to work really well

Re: Breakin' In Speakers

I just play loud whenever I have the chance, but I have heard conflicting views on speaker break-in. I go by what I originally heard, which is that it takes about 15 hours of high volume playing for effective break-in. Some people use CD players or MP3 players for this, but I prefer actual playing of the instrument.

I recently heard that speaker break-in only takes a few seconds of high-volume playing, and that this is frequently accomplished at the factory when the company is testing the speakers they are preparing to ship out for sale. According to this, most speakers are "broken-in" before we get them, or they will be the first time we use them. I still go by the 15 hours of regular playing, so it's kind of like "teaching" the materials which make up the speaker to resonate with the sounds it is being used for.

I break in speakers by gigging them. One or two nights of loud, long sets seems to do the trick for me.

Re: Breakin' In Speakers

I run a CD in repeat mode for a solid day or two...

Moderate volume.

Pumping massive levels right off the bat is kinda bad.

Back when I was a boy, we didn't know anything about speaker break-in. We just bought a new amp and played it........and we LIKED IT! haha
