breakin strings on my EJ strat - help?

Re: breakin strings on my EJ strat - help?

Use a Q Tip to check for burrs in the saddles. Drag the tip across the saddle and the cotton will snag on even the smallest flaw. You can also use a Dremel to enlarge the slot in the saddle to ease the break.

Re: breakin strings on my EJ strat - help?

I've not broken a string on my EJ yet. I am pretty heavy handed.

So, here's my trick. Swap the saddle from the A string with the D string's sadddle. You'll know pretty quick if it was the saddle or your heavy handedness.

Other than that, how do you like it? What color did you get? I love mine and I'm not a strat guy. Do you use the trem or just leave it alone?

Nothing wrong with trying a little lube like the Big Bend's Nut Sauce--it's workd really well for me on a couple of bridge saddles.

Re: breakin strings on my EJ strat - help?

thanks guys ... i will be working on it this weekend (after i help my son with his science fair experiment and redline a process and procedures document and do all the other 'honey do' items) ... i will do the q tip trick and see about swapping a saddle .. the thing is that i will have to wait to see if i break a string over the next few weeks ... if an A string breaks, that would certainly point to the saddle ... if a D string breaks, that is gonna point to my technique ... so we'll see

scott, i got the 2 tone burst ... i wanted red or black ... but when i played all 5 of the ones at the shop, this one sounded and felt best ... i like it alot ... i use it on at least half of our tunes - blends well with the other guitarists 70's SG ... the neck is perfect for my hands and i have no problem with 'stickiness' that some guys complain about ... i am still twiddlin with the pup heights, searching for maximum 'quack' and minimimzed 'strat-itis' ...

thanks for all the help folks - will report back when i know more

Re: breakin strings on my EJ strat - help?

Just oil the sucker, no need to change the saddle, unless you see damage. It has cured my probs completely, I bend the shizzle out of em....

Re: breakin strings on my EJ strat - help?

thanks bludave ... will do with the magnifyer and sanding/polishing/lube ... but switching it out for graphite is really gonna be last resort ... that's GOTTA change the tone in 'who knows how' ways ...

The tone of the guitars IMHO gets a little warmer (and some Strats are to bright so thats a good thing). I have these on 2 of my 5 Teles, all 4 of my Strats, both Les Pauls and my 335. I have a few guitars that I have not had to much trouble breaking strings on so I have not had any reason to change them out, but after an hour or so you won't even notice it. Try all the other cleaning and polishing first. With a nice Strat like that you should be ablr to get by without breaking strings. In my case I couldn't. The Graphite works well for me.

Re: breakin strings on my EJ strat - help?

this is a interesting thread, ill have to try the lube thing.. i break strings all the time... tho i never break the unwound ones or VERY rarely... just the big wound ones.. mostly the big E (about once a week... maybe two if im lucky :eek13:).. its kinda odd :laugh2: i fixed my problems with 11-52's they stil break but much less than the 9 and 10 ive tried before.. i tried changing the saddle or even teh whole bridge ones to a wilkinson tremolo (tho that was more for tuning stability for using the bar) i switched it back cuz it seemed to change the tone in a bad way for me... maybe the block was brass i never realy checked... stil wuold break strings anyhow and then i tried bigger strings for resistance and tonal preference and it helped alot

Re: breakin strings on my EJ strat - help?

so far, no burrs .. i got a magnifying glass and a q tip ... smooth as a baby's butt ... i did confirm that the core of the wound string broke right at the saddle point, not at the 'angle break' where it comes out from the bridge plate and up through the saddle (although those angles do look a little 'pinched' - i might get some of that little surgical tubing that SRV used) ... so i strung it back up and used a little lube .. i switched to "light top - normal bottom" strings too ... these are 3 unwound strings from a 9 gauge set and 3 wound strings from a 10 gauge set ... maybe this'll help too ... i already like how they sound and feel better than a straight set of 9s ..i have been a 10s player my whole life but 10s felt a bit too stiff on the EJ strat .. if this works, it'll be a good compromise

more as i learn it
thanks again for all the advice

Re: breakin strings on my EJ strat - help?

man, i have been a pretty loyal d'addario user for over 25 years - that would be rough ... i'll see if that drastic a measure is called for ...

what would you recomend for the EJ?
