Bridge humbucker for a PRS SE Tremonti

Hi everyone,

I will be greatful to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

I have a passive EMG Marti Friedman set on my SE Tremonti.

I like the neck pu a lot. But the bridge is not doing it for me in some respects. I play at mid volume a lot and with my other guitars, I am able to get more from the pu when I dime the volume. It also sounds nasal for open chords. It does well with high gain but Sunday mornings is mid gain territory, lol. I play through an HX Stomp so the volume knob is my friend.

I would like mid presence but slanted a tad toward low mids, not high midds. So chords can sound full and single notes sound rounder, not piercing.

I am thinking a 59/Custom hybrid would distort more at 10. But play nice at 5 with mid gain colors in between on the volume... Gosh, I hope that makes sense.

I have a Custom 5 on another guitar and would rather have a different SD on this one.

Am I on the right track?

Agreed on the Custom direction. I had the same problem with my Tremonti, and the Custom 5 was the closest I could get to decent. I loved how that thing played, but I couldn't get over that nasally sound, so I ended up selling it and going with an LTD instead.

I hear you! Yes, the bridge position does sound nasally.

I just ordered a 59/custom hybrid and do have a Custom 5 in another guitar that I could swap around if needed.

Fingers crossed. The guitar does sound great on the neck and middle positions IMO.

Have some magnets to swap out on the Custom if it isn't something you like.

The 59n and 59/custom hybrid did the trick!
I installed them with each tone pot push-pull for series/parallel. Excellent results!

Happy that it worked for you! That is a great combo.

What’s the 59/custom hybrid like in parallel? I’ve wondered about mismatched coils wired this way.

I remember trying it once, and thinking that I liked it better split.

It increases the note clarity while retaining at least 95% of the output. I like how it helps increase chord note definition in low and mid-gain scenarios. As well as a tamer clean sound in the middle position.
