Bridge P90 and a FR Trem?

Is a P90 style pickup sufficiently wide enough to be in the bridge position of a guitar equipped with a Floyd Rose type tremelo?

never seen that combo but i think it would be fine

Re: Bridge P90 and a FR Trem?

It might be a bit narrow, depends a bit on the P-90. I don't know if any pickup manufacturers make a fender/floyd spaced P-90 or how good it is.

Some people have zero problem with the strings not lining up, just raise the polepiece under any string until volume is even. Others find that does bad things to tone balance (bright/thin E strings) and can't stand it.

It's no worse than a traditional spaced humbucker under a wider spaced bridge, and if you are playing with a fair amount of compression, the failure to line up is just cosmetic.

As far as never been done, I've seen it in strats and teles (just not with a Floyd) and they just didn't worry about the strings not being perfectly over the poles.

If I were you, and must use a P-90, make sure the bridge pup has a fairly hot set of magnets in it. The spacing issue usually isn't a problem when you're dealing with ceramic or A8 or A5 magnets because the magnetic field is strong enough to sufficiently "catch" the string when its not exactly over the pole. Since P-90s use two bar magnets, experiment with different types not only for tone, but for balance.

Thanks for the useful info guys.

Basically I'm brainstorming on what kind of build-my-own project I might work on this year for fun. I'm thinking of getting a pre-routed rectangular body blank set up for three P90's, a rear control cavity, and a Floyd Rose tremelo (and the corresponding locking nut on the neck as well). I'll shape the body based on what my imagination comes up with. I've swapped magnets before, so no problem there.

There's still so many things to think about; I'll have to choose wood type next. Maybe a mahogany body and a maple neck.

Well this is a unique request. Can't say I've ever seen that....

Exactly!!! I was looking around my basement at what I have...

Humbuckers? Check.
Single Coils? Check.
Actives? Check.
P90's? Well I have a set of PRails and I like the P90 sound a lot... what if I made a pure P90 guitar -- and it would be different from all the other P90 guitars?

It got me into mad-scientist mode. Just need to figure out what pot value to use on the Flux Capacitor... :drive:

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I found these pics which might inspire you somewhat.

I think Lollar makes some F-spaced P-90s. Ask him if he can wind you something.
