Now i'm mainly an electric player, but recently i got an Alvarez AD60SC acoustic to mess around on. i am in the process of upgrading the nut, tuners, saddle, and bridge pins. Any advice on what to get?? It's a spruce top w/ mahogany back, sides, and neck. rosewood fretboard. I'm just looking for a bigger sound out of it. I was planning on getting a graphtech nut and saddle, and grover tuners. I have no idea what to do about bridge pins though. any thoughts?? thanks.

Re: Bridge pin/nut/saddle/tuners recommendations

Go Tusq on the bridgepins, but be sure to call graphtech and get the right size. Or you can order some bone/horn bridgepins off ebay if you know the size for 12-14 dollars plus shipping.Be carefull though with the ebay bone/horn stuff some of the guys are agents for foreign makers and ..thats why i reccomened graph tech tusq.
If you can afford it have alutheir cut a bone saddle. If not, Tusq.Grover tuners on an acoustic is de rigeuer.Nut should also be cut by a pro and go Graptech tusq/graphite or real bone preferably.

i have no idea what de rigeuer means. I was looking at Jellifish bridge pins or DeAndrea bridge pins b/c they're both metal (an alloyand brass respectively) and my acoustic is fiarly bass heavy. Would these crispen the sound up a bit??

I think I spelt it wrong. Those brass pins should sound pretty crisp and bright i think, They would sound great on a lot of mid range built acoustics is my take on them but if your going for the standrad warm woody sound, and your guitar is prettty nice, Id stick with tusq.

Re: Bridge pin/nut/saddle/tuners recommendations

If your guitar is a good one, with solid woods and no laminates, you'll hear a tonal improvement switching to bone or TUSQ for your nut, bridge saddle and bridge pins if your nut, saddle and pins are currently plastic. And if you switched to fossilized walrus ivory you'd hear even more of an improvement. Your guitar may or may not be worth the expense - depends how good it is to start with.

it's a decent guitar. no laminates. Solid spruce top. Solid mahogany back and sides. one piece mahogany neck. so it's decent quality. Does anybody have any experience with brass/metal bridge pins? i mean, in theory they seem like they would add some nice tone improvements. Maybe make the guitar a bit brighter, crisper, and add more sustain. sound about right?

You don't see any virtuoso acoustic players using brass pins. I'm sure there's someone who does - but they're few and far between.

Go with what the pros use - and it ain't brass.

These types of upgrades should only be done on a guitar that already has a great tone. I wouldn't do them on a guitar that you're not in love with. Thinking these changes will make a mediocre guitar into a great one is not right thinking. Just thought I'd mention that. In fact, I think that extends to electric guitars too. It's fun changing pickups and hot rodding our guitars, but I've never been able to make a mediocre guitar that lacked mojo into a magical instrument by upgrading parts on that guitar. A guitar has to have "it" in the first place.

Re: Bridge pin/nut/saddle/tuners recommendations

it's certainly not a mediocre guitar. it plays amazingly well. And i love the overall tone of it. I'm just trying to tweak it a bit.

Then it's a good candidate for the upgrades you're considering.
