I have a Fender Jap tele with a basswood body. i hate the way it sounds. any bridge PU suggestions? I love the DimArzio Twang King on my ash-bodied tele.

Re: bridge PU for a tele

anybody?

I have a Dimarzio Pre-B1 in there, but still the tele ain't sounding as good as I want it to be.

There are just too many good ones to name just one. What are you looking for, vintage, high output, humbucking? Give us a little info and you will probably get some great suggestions.

SD Quater Pound set

Why would anyone use those things for anything but emo music?

I'd suggest Tele Hotstacks for it. Given the wood, I'm really not sure what would work best.

Re: bridge PU for a tele

it all depends on what you want it to sound like. If you want a hot sound out of it I would suggest the tapped hot set or even a set of anderson pickups (I know he uses basswood on some of his tele bodies and they sound great.) If you want dead vintage sounds try a broadcaster (there are a few good ones but seymour makes a great one) for something completely different from your average tele sound try a SC sized humbucker like a hotrails.

Re: bridge PU for a tele

My fave from Duncan is the alnico 2 Duncan Custom Shop version of the Tapped Tele Hot...I use it in my favorite Strat, although it's a Tele bridge pickup. The standard alnico 5 Tapped Tele Hot is excellant too. The Jerry Donahue is a great one too.

I also like the Fralin Blues Special alot and also the Joe Barden.

Yeah, we need a little more to go on than that.

Re: bridge PU for a tele

sorry guys for the lack of info....

ok, i'm more into the vintage/moderate output kind of sc pickups. the thing that is the porblem in this case is, the body is basswood. i have an ash bodied tele (tokai), and no matter what pickups i put there it just sounds great. this fender that i have is a little harder to coax nice sounds out of...

i know JDs are might fine, but do you think it would be a nice complement to basswood? I might check out the andersons though...

Re: bridge PU for a tele

hey guys, just wanted to share what i found out regarding this problem of mine.

I found this old "Keith style" tele bridge... yep the one in gold finish. it is non-ferrous therefore no magnetic attraction between the pickup and the bridge plate. Lo and behold, when I tested it, it sounded quite good! Nice and beefy... not a vintage tele tone (pickup wasn't deisgned that way) but still a tele tone nonetheless.

maybe sometimes, those vintage birdgeplates (stamped steel) aren't for all type of pickups... my pickup didn't have the copper baseplate... i don't know if that's a factor too

Lack of a baseplate would definitely be a factor. The copper baseplate is actually copper-coated steel, so the baseplate is magnetic and concentrates the magnetic field more toward the strings for the beefier twang the Tele is famous for.

Re: bridge PU for a tele

yeah i guess this pickup wasn't designed to go with the vintage style bridge plate. it's a DiMarzio Pre-B1... the vintage bridge plate was giving the tone too much of a sharp attack... as if the tone was all coming from the pickup and the strings, no "woodiness" in the tone at all. replaced the bridge and viola, the wood is in the tone again.

i'm not sure though if it was the pickup design that didn't go well with the vintage bridge plate or that basswood isn't suited for the vintage tele hardware

Re: bridge PU for a tele

I'd try the Jerry Donahue. I have a MIJ Tele also and I have a JD in the bridge and a vintage 54N. Its a great combination it works real well for me, but I believe the body on mine is Alder or it could be swamp ash I am not certain. Whatever it is I would try this combination. Ilike it.
