Bridge pup for P-bass?

Hi everybody,

I'm thinking of putting an extra (bridge) pickup on my old squire P-bass.
It's just a simple standard bass, plays well, but sounds a bit too muffled to my taste. It only has the one standard P-bass pup installed. Would it be a good idea to assemble a bridge pickup (like the jazz bass has) for a bit more treble detail? And what would be a good pickup?
I'm actually a guitarplayer, so I don't have a lot of experience with bass customising yet.
I wouldn't actually do the job myself, since there's going to be a lot of woodwork involved. My guitar guy will take care of that :naughty:

if you were going to do it a jazz bass pup is the way to go, a more vintage model would have better top end clarity.

i would look into this and see how much it is going to cost before you jump in. it may not be worth the expense. you need to come up with some way of controling the volume of the new pup too.

my 1st thought was to replace the P pickup with a Duncan 1/4 Pound. Put in a couple CTS or Alpha pots and you're ready to rock. Not terribly expensive and makes a huge difference in tone.

I personally wouldn't bother routing out a Squier body if I couldn't do it myself for free.

Exactly. I'd consider the QP or the Vintage P-Bass models or maybe an Antiquity P-Bass from Duncan. If your Squier has the original pickup in it it's probably a cheapie and I would think it is pretty much a given that a Duncan would make a big improvement.

I'd replace the existing pickup and not rout the bass for a second pickup.

Or, if money isn't really an issue you could install a piezo-equipped bridge with a blend pot. But that's probably a bit high-endish for a Squier.
