Bridge Pup For Strat

Hello all. I just recently picked up a MIA strat w/American Standard pups. I really like the neck and middle pups but the bridge sounds kind of thin and harsh. I'm looking for a pickup that will match the stock neck and middle well. I was thinking either the Seymour Duncan Five-two or the Antiquity II. would these work well with the stock American Standard pups? Thanks for your input!

My 2 favs are the twangbanger or the SSL5/6...I'm like you and hate normally the stock bridge pickup!

There are sound samples on the Seymour Duncan site to check out.

Re: Bridge Pup For Strat

Would you say the SSL5 compliments the stock neck and middle pups well?

Absolutely..It's less toppy, more mids, more lows...Beefier overall...The David Gilmour bridge pickup! You lose some of that nice Knofler quack in the middle/bridge positions, but I like the SSL5/6 alot and it's in 2 of my 5 strats that I own..I have the Twangbanger in another 2 and a Fralin SP43 in the 5th one.

Is there going to be a noticeable output difference since it's hotter?

I also see you have the Antiquity pups. How are those? I'm trying to preserve the Strat tone as much as possible and they seem like a good option.

Re: Bridge Pup For Strat

Get it and tap it to switch between output levels so you have a traditional strat tone and a gnarly thick strat tone. It's a deal hotter but perfect output and tone. Think Comfortable Numb.

Not a big volume difference using the SSL5/6 in the bridge...The antiquity Surfers are my favs but only in the neck and middle spots. The Surfers are pricier, but they are awesome! Magical pickups!

If money is an issue, the SSL1s are also fantastic.

Money isn't really an issue for me. My Les Paul is getting some new Duncan's installed now, but other than that I've never had any experience with new pups. I might put the surfers in the neck and middle. I watched a few videos and liked them. What don't you like about the surfer in the bridge?

I've never used the Surfer bridge..I had used the Texas Hot which I think is A2 poles? I just seem to like the TB and the SSL5/6 and I've used them a long time.I can't remember now if there was an actual Surfer bridge when I bought mine?

If you're talking about splitting the SSL5/6,it just doesn't sound all that great split and it's a real tradeoff as is with splitting alot of pickups(even humbuckers) Only my opinion of course.

Re: Bridge Pup For Strat

Have you paired the surfers with the SSL5 bridge?

The blue strat you see in my avatar originally was Surfer/Surfer/SSL6,but I put a Twangbanger in place of the SSL6..That pickup is in one of my other strats with Fat 50s.

Re: Bridge Pup For Strat

Also...I always prefer the snappier and slightly brighter A5 poled strat pickups in the neck and middle positions.

Re: Bridge Pup For Strat

Thanks for all the help. I'm leaning towards the surfers and the SSL6 in the bridge. Looks like a great setup. The covers look like different shades of white though. Does it look odd having 2 of the covers in the faded white on the surfers?

Change all 3 covers so they match..Not a problem. You're welcome!

Re: Bridge Pup For Strat

Should I get the RWRP for the middle or just the standard surfer for the middle? It says the RWRP mimics a humbucker. I assume that's how my strat is setup now since there's no hum in positions 2 and 4.

Thats your call? If you want no hum in the 2 and 4 positions, then you go RW/RP middle..If not, just go all 3..I'm not sure about the polarity or North/South relationships between the Surfers and the SSL6 and I can check the magnet polarity on my Surfers and SSL6..You want either bridge South polarity Middle North and Neck South.....Or the opposite of the 3...Not sure you can follow me here but?

I can't remember without checking if the SSL5/6 is north or south polarity and about the Surfers, but I will check and let you know.

Your 2 and 4 positions would be "hum cancelling" but it doesn't mimic an actual humbucker and those 2 positions end up in parallel and not series like a regular humbucker.

Ha! Not really. I was going to email SD customer service to make sure everything would work fine together. Will there be any tone difference between the RWRP and the standard surfer?

Some people do hear a difference...Personally I like the hum cancellation..I use mostly strict bridge and neck only positions..Sometimes I use neck/middle for SRV and some other stuff....Very rare that I use the middle alone though..I use the bridge position alot and roll the tone off..Make sure you have bridge tone also!
