Hey guys I’m looking into some pickup sets.. I’m wondering if anyone can recommend a nice PAF set with a bright neck pickup.. I find the Slash set to have a muddy neck pickup that I’m not a fan of. This is for a Gibson Les Paul that I have. I was hopeing you guys could give me some good recommendations! Thanks!

Re: Bright Neck PAF

You can try a Jazz or Humbucker From Hell. Not exactly a PAF but it will brighten that position a bit.

Is your issue too dark a neck pickup, or too much bass? Often times it is possible to get them confused. I'm assuming you have a Gibson type wiring, if this is true you can change the volume pot on the neck from 500k to 1meg to brighten it on the cheap.

I beleive it is too dark... the Seth Lover is what I was eyeing up but I didn’t have a chance to try them for myself.. I’ve been pleased with sound clips I heard though. I was hopeing this pickup would be mentioned.. I wasn’t sure if I had the right impression of it. It’s always good to hear from owners I find.

If you haven't already, replace the stock 300K pots with 500K. If that isn't enough, there have been plenty of good recommendations.

Re: Bright Neck PAF

Some pickup winders recommend 550K pots for the neck pickup (PAF winds). I find that most PAF type winds are already bright as is. I'm using 550K pots with my Seth Lovers. Can't say I notice the difference between 500-550k.

If the op wants a brighter sound with more string twang and clarity, I highly recommend spending $1 on a 180 pf. capacitor and soldering it across the two terminals of his guitar’s volume control. If you have two volume controls, spend $2 on two. Try to find silver mica.

Of the Seymour Duncan offerings, the Jazz or Antiquity would be on the brighter side.

You can easily get your Slash neck bright enough for your liking by increasing the volume pot to 1 meg, wiring the tone pot downstream from the volume pot, turning the pickup around so the screws are nearest the bridge, and changing the magnet to A5.

Re: Bright Neck PAF

There are several good neck pups that will give you what you're looking for. But before you go and spend an extra $100 you might want to try what some have already suggested: Replace you neck volume pot with a 500k or even 1 meg ohm pot. Take out the A2 magnet and replace it with an A4 or A5. Some have experienced some boominess with A5 in the neck, but I haven't personally heard that in my guitars. Either mag will make a huge difference in terms of brighter tone and less mud. You may already have the pup of your dreams, you just have to custom tailor it a bit. Wait a minute...do you have the original Slash or the newer Slash+? If it's the higher output Slash+ you'll probably end up with another pup, but not necessarily. Try these suggestions first and see if it does the trick.
