There's the key... pads. His "recording space" was non-existent in the tiny room Ed had at the time of 1984, so the best "sound" he could get was Simmons pads, a real snare and real cymbals. Ugh... I know.

Honestly, as much has I love his drumming and have been a fan, the only decent drum sound he ever had that matched his skill was F.U.C.K and Van Halen III and that's partly because Andy Johns (ex. Led Zeppelin) was placing the mics. Balance was OK and VHII, WaCF, Fair Warning and Diver Down were passable, but honestly I don't think Donn Landee has any clue how to get a really good drum sound. Carboard box 70's crappola.

K... so here's a creative way to derail a trollish EVH post... talk about the drummer.

:cool2:

I am reading 1984 right now 'cause I was supposed to read it in high school and I never did!
You think I want to read this ****?

Hell No!

But a friend of mine reccomended it and lent-me-his-personal-copy and now...finally...now that I've finally dusted it off, after all these years, I have to finish this rubbish before my high school reunion in just a few more weeks, so that when I give it back to him, I can look him in the eye and say "**** you and your stupid book! I would rather listen to the album!"

^ I'll save you the trouble. *Spoiler alert* The pigs climb to the top of the clock tower and start shooting the other animals, who have begun burning books.

I heard Eddie used an old deluxe reverb and an MI Audio Crunchbox to get his tone on every album. Makes sense when you get the guitar he used and you pair it up with that gear. It makes van halen. I promise.

I don't even care if you think MI Audio has been around that long..... THAT'S HOW HE DID IT. DON'T ARGUE WITH AN EXPERT. :headbang:

Here's a snapshot of the man himself, giving a lecture on "how to create the Brown sound"

Why do I get the feeling that this is the ending of another book whose title is an example of a search subject on this forum's search engine! I guess the number is the only connection between the album and the book, but I digress.

I wanted to say that I've had it for like 10 years now, but only recently have I started making sense of the tone on that first album.

To me, It sounds really burnt, like after a forest fire, and if it were a chicken it would be extra crispy, cooked by lasers.
It wasn't till I heard the guitar on "The Sword" from R&FNR that I started thinking about this new dimension of tone.
Have you guys heard it?
