Budget humbucker set for an all mahogany LP style?

Hello all,

Hoping I can ask your advice again please.

I picked up an inexpensive Les Paul style finished body recently and am starting to look for pickups.

The guitar has a mahogany body & neck, and the neck is glued in. It's routed for 2 humbuckers, 4 pots and a switch.

I'd like to try and stay below $100 for the set, and while it'd be nice I don't absolutely need coil splitting.

I got some great advice here last time, and now have one guitar with a SD '59 neck & custom hybrid bridge, and a strat with vintage flat strat single coils.

With this new guitar I am obviously on a budget but also open to doing something that'll make it different from the other two. Quite interested in possibly playing some jazz or blues on it - nothing super dark/heavy/muddy.

I'd really appreciate any ideas or suggestions on this - I don't have a solid goal in mind and curious as to what I could do with it. Thanks very much in advance.

I'd get a second-hand, nickel-covered '59 set and I change the stock magnets with an A3 for the neck and an A2 for the bridge. Done!

I've had this very set in my ES-339 for over three years now and it sounds great for Mainstream Jazz, Smooth Jazz, Fusion, Classic Rock and of course, Blues.

You can thank me later. ;)

PS: A Seth Lover set is good too, but it's gonna cost you, even second-hand. Consider yourself warned! :cool2:

Used 59s and Jazz, buy some A4 and A2 and go nuts with them.

Right now on eBay there is a Distortion bridge, and your choice of a distortion neck, screaming demon, or 59 neck. All < $50 each

OR a Phat cat and a 59. Or try a JB

Make it a rocker!

Sorry - just read the rest of the post! - Go with the phat cat and a 59b

Buy the used Duncans or DiMarzios that best fit your wishes for ~$40/ea

Thank you all, I've spent a while this weekend listening to the sound samples and there's some great suggestions here.

Going to read up on changing magnets and covers, sounds interesting.

If you want it to sound different than the others, you need P-90 pups. GFS make "Mean 90" pups that fit a humbucker rout and sound absolutely fabulous. Several different styles and under $40 each brand new.

Their "Dream 90" is also excellent and very gorgeous for $5 less.

If you want to stick with buckers but with a slightly different tone, the "Dream 180" comes in many beautiful styles.

I have each of these in several different guitars and love them all. My personal favorite which I have in 3 or 4 guitars and have been using for about 15 years is the "Mean 90".
