Build 2012

I'm going to build a strat to compliment Creature, my HSS mahogany deluxe. I have a feeling I want to do a more "budget build" but this time, less of a "fat-tone" strat and more of a stratty-strat. I have my eye on a 50s CV Squier Strat, but I would like to get some input on how to bring out the best in this strat without breaking the bank.

I also want to know, based on your collective knowledges, whether warmoth guards work in squiers, bridges, pots and knobs, etc., are swappable in this guitar. I know squiers are metric and USA bits are NOT metric, so I would like to avoid (where possible) any sort of un-due conflict.

Let me know what y'all think.

Re: Build 2012

Squier's 2-point bridge is not replaceable. If it's got a 6 screw bridge, it's MIM spacing. I never worry about pickguards lining up 100%, any additional screw holes WILL be covered up by the pickguard. You're going to want to replace the pots, but the knobs should fit on CTS/Bourns pots anyway.

The higher end Squiers do have AlNiCo pickups, so you may not end up replacing them.

Re: Build 2012

Honestly I'd watch eBay for a used Fender body, MIM stuff can be had pretty cheap. Mighty Mite necks are pretty reasonable too. Shoppin used for pickups can save some coin too.

Re: Build 2012

For $350 you can get a used MIM Strat easily. If you're planning on replacing the pickups and bridge in either case, I'd start there. The Squier will have better pickups than a used MIM (with the split ceramic magnets), but if you're going to gut the thing anyway, start with a better body and neck. (Unless you're really going for the vintage look.)
