Building a Cabinet

i was thinking today that i might want to build a cabinet for my home use purposes- try to save some money and build my own 2x12 cab with some V-30's in it. is this a tough project? seems like i would be able to get the correct dimensions and build the deal out of particle board or something of the such. i'm not too worried about looks- wouldn't mind having a wooden box with speakers and no cloth grill. is this as easy as it seems? are there some websites that have cab dimensions to build off of?

I just finished building a 2 x 12 cab with Celestion G12H80s to use with my vintage Garnet BTO 120 watt head. I used the dimensions from a Germino 2 x 12 (24"h x 30"w x 12"d) and slanted the front baffle back an inch from bottom to top like a Marshall 1936 cab. I'd stay away from particle board. Baltic birch is the recommended wood, but I used 3/4" 9 ply fir plywood for the top, bottom, sides and front baffle and 1/2" for the rear baffles. The rear baffle is in three pieces with the middle removable. A lot of people use 1/2" plywood for the front baffle but you run the risk of the baffle twisting and screwing up your speakers. You don't have that problem with 3/4" but you have to remember to flare the cut outs for the speakers to avoid causing interference with the sound projection. Here's a couple of pics:

Let me know if you want anymore details and good luck.

thanks guys, this looks like a pretty basic summer project for me, i've built a few subwoofer enclosures before and this doesn't look too different. also think i'm going to go for a 1x12 for simplicity, it's one less speaker to buy and i really don't think i need the volume of a 2x12. thanks again.

Yes, it's fairly easy. The hardest part is cutting a perfect circle. If you have a router and a circle jig it's easy, if not, you might want to get someone to cut the holes for you. I've used 3/4 high density particle board with very good results, it is fairly heavy though.

does the baltic birch have a good look to it? i've been thinking and i'm probably going to just put a finish on the box, maybe a deep red laquer or something, then protect the speaker with a metal grill. might turn out kinda cool.
