Burstbuck Pro replacement

So I recently bought a beautiful 2005 Gibson Les Paul Standard (pics coming soon) which I love, but I'm not sure about the Burstbucker Pro pickups that came with it. I think the neck pickup is ok, but the bridge is too thin and brittle. Not beefy/agressive enough.

So, Gibson guys, what's your opinion on these pickups? I've heard some good things about the Burstbucker Pro's and I wanted to get the forum's take on them. This bridge pickup really isn't working for me. Anyone else have this experience or do I maybe have crappy taste?

Not the most amazing bridge

Go for the Burstbucker 2 is you want unpotted
APH1s are great

are you considering higher output?

Yeah, I'd like something a little hotter. Not as hot as a Distortion or anything like that though--just something thicker with a slight output boost. And I definitely want potted.

Possibly a Custom Custom or even a JB (didn't like it in my Ibanez, but have heard good things about them in a LP). Maybe one of the "vintage hot" Andersons.

how are the burstbuckers pro compared to the 498´s for the bridge in a LP?

The burstbucker is more a "paf" type pup, and the 498 is more modern. From what i've heard the 498 isn't a good match for an LP. I've only had experience with BBs, so I don't know.

Re: Burstbuck Pro replacement

I had a 498 in the bridge of my SG Standard. I would not describe it a "beefy". It's modern, pretty hot, but lacking in low end chunk.

Re: Burstbuck Pro replacement

I loved some of the BBs and hated others. Depends on the pickup I think. I had a set of BBVs and the bridge was real good. I did not care for the neck at all. And they were wound by the same person (PS) who also did a set of BBs from my R7. The strange thing is that I love that set! And I do not think that this opinion of mine is solely based on the grade of the alnico magnet.

Anyways, if I were you I'd check antiquity and A2P bridges. This is because I kinda suspect that the natural tone of your bridge is not the thickest. If these don't work the next step is to go for a CC but then you'd be taken away from the PAF territory.

BTW if you can get hold of Zhang ask him about BB3s. I remember from LPF that he knows a great deal of info on those. ;)

I had the BB 2 and 3 in my 57' Goldtop. My experience was similar to yours....the neck was not too bad at all, but I had trouble dialing in the bridge. It was always either a little to trebely, not thick enough....something. No matter how I adjusted it, it wasn't right.

I changed to a set of Seth's, and they sounded REALLY good. Again, especially in the neck. If the BB was an 8 in the neck, the Seth was an 11. The Seth in the bridge was a vast improvement over the BB, but I did not like it as much as I liked the neck. I would have eventually traded it out for something else. A 59' probably would have been my next move, or perhaps an Antiquity.

I had a C5 in the bridge of my LP Standard, and it really was fabulous....except for the highs...always just a tad brittle, but otherwise awsome. The standard was a little brighter naturally than my GT.

In short, I'd try a 59' in your bridge....I love it in the bridge of my Standard. Other choices would be Seth, Antiquity and APH.

Re: Burstbuck Pro replacement

I've been going down the same road...my BB Pro in the bridge of my Les Paul is brittle and thin....and I wish the burstbucker bridge was just a tad more powerful. The difference (resistance wise) between the neck and the bridge is something like 500 ohms...and I know judging output by resistance is hit or miss...but the fact of the matter is that the BBPro bridge is underpowered next to the bridge. When switching from neck to bridge, the only way to get close to balance...is to drop the neck under the body and raise the bridge until it's barely touching the strings...not good in my book.

I've been debating either a JB/59 setup or a 59/59 setup...but I'm fearful that the 59 in the bridge might give me the same problem...

I dunno...
