C 30 getting HOT!!!

i have an older Classic 30 combo that i was using today for 3-4 hours on about 4 on the volume knob..... the back chassy part of the amp got very hot..... the speaker cable to my Peavey Classic extention cab was also very hot at the jack area....

I've asked this before but could this be normal heat or could something be juiceing up and over heating? and if something is over heating, WHAT? There is not much inside these amps.... i assume the tubes are where the heat is coming from of course but a small Transformer on the left side of the chassy under the Extent cab jack was pretty hot too... I'd hate to take this in for a use-less repair shop trip if this is normal....

Re: C 30 getting HOT!!!

are you sure it's a speaker cable and not a guitar cable? I've never had a cable get hot to the touch on me before.

Tube amps do get hot, no doubt after playing 4 hours. Trannies can get hot. Does it smell?

ya it is a good speaker cable... pretty new.... i have a bunch of them in 6 and 10 feet lengths... I can tell right away they are speaker cables from the sheer size of the cable... They are thicker then any of my guitar cables... but i always "always" unscrew the jack cover and look to see if it is a speaker cord or an instrument cord just in case... you can tell by the wires that are soldered to the jack

As i said the amp gets extremely warm even when there is no extention cab plugged into it.. so the the whole back of the chassy gets hot. The extention speaker cable is plugged into the chassy and it got really hot as well! The cable was really warm for about 5 inches of length from the jack, and the jack was pretty hot when i was packing my gear down.... this warm end was the cable end plugged into the amp not the cab.....

As i said the amp gets really hot even without the other cab plugged in... makes me wonder what would cause an amp to get so hot if something would be wrong with it... I heard the tubes on this amp run at a high temp... i only had the volume on 4... imagine if it was on 8

I run mine at 9 a fair bit for extended periods of time. Its only ever heated up really bad once (when it was on 3-5 ish) one of the tubes looked like it was about to melt, i only noticed when I smelt burning. Tried it again later and I had no problems. Weird amps.

Re: C 30 getting HOT!!!

Peavey tech's sopport and a local tech both said these amps do get very hot... Peavey wrote me that the chassy acts like a Heat Sink for the tubes.... They said if i noticed no extra noise, or drop in volume it is most likely normal heat... The tech said he has had one since 93 and it gets really hot to touch.

Re: C 30 getting HOT!!!

yes the EL84-powered peavey classic amps do get very hot. i had a classic 15 and i'm sure i could have used it to fry an egg if i was hungry and didn't have a hot plate or stove around.

Re: C 30 getting HOT!!!

A pal of mine has a 1999 C30 Tweed, with a V30 in it, and his amp is also getting VERY hot.

He (very niclely done) installed a little computer extracter fan, that has it's own plug, and thus, does not use the same power supply as the amp's, and also does NOT create ANY electrical noise in the tone what so ever !
It is also VERY EFFECTIVE, as you can feel how much HOT AIR that lil fan extract once the tubes are real hot !

Works like a charm !

Re: C 30 getting HOT!!!

Yes it's normal for the C30 to get hot. Not to worry. Keep jamming!

you can count on that!!!! maybe i'll keep my lunch in the back of the cab and have a nice warm sandwhich while jamming... Wish i could convert the heat to cool and have an amp top beer cooling holder..... now that would be something!!!!!! Imagine the market for such a toy!!! Drunk and happy C30 owners everywhere

Re: C 30 getting HOT!!!

Heh... I have to crank my air conditioner to keep my room from getting insanely hot because of my amp.

Luckily the C50s have fans in them. But I'm not kidding, it will heat up a room in short order, especialy when I crank up around 10.

Re: C 30 getting HOT!!!

Here is an idea . . .

. . . if you are real worried about the amount of heat, get one of those miniture car-fans that you see in old-people's car's - you know, those cheap plastic, dash mounted ones.

Clip/attach it (velcro ?) on the back og the amp, and you have a very cheap solution to a constant wind flow over your valves !
You sometimes see them in taxi's in Florida too:

. . . might look "funny" mounted on the back of the amp, but if it works !

Re: C 30 getting HOT!!!

winter coming soon... our practice space will be in a cold garage for a while..... The Canadian fall is setting in and the Garage is heated but it will still be pretty cool in there by Decemeber..... everyone maybe sitting around my amp for heat...

Invest in Peavey stocks now...Canadian sales will be through the roof soon....EH

Re: C 30 getting HOT!!!

I second a small fan blowing on the back of the fan. An internal fan would be decent also if wired to minimize noise. I went the internal route with my JTM 622, and almost had to do this to my LC15, but other mods were done to cool the LC15.

it's a shame Peavey no longer has a Canadian operation north of Toronto... they closed it down and ship everything to Canada from the USA... before the closed it down i used to be able to buy repaired items and stuff direct from the warehouse thru a tech friend of mine... only thing was i could not buy new stuff.. used and abuse for dirt cheap was a good thing!!!!... They would either unload some gear they had loaned to artists for tours or stuff that was returned because of damage or warranty issues for cheap... they had a room off to the side of the warehouse that had a ton of old amps and guitars.... a lot of stuff from the 80's that they couldn't sell too... plus abused Classic series amps and some 5150 stuff... i walked out of there with a fair bit for cheap. They had repaired the goods but could not sell it for new

I wish i had grabbed a C20 that was sitting there.... i could of grabbed it for $80 or something..

My Classic 30 i bought used from a local store.... almost as cheap as i could of from the old Warehouse!!!!
