C5 opinions

good morning guitar players,
as I have stated in a prev post Im looking to replace a set of gib BB's for a LP I think Ive got it narrowed down to the c5/B and the Alnico PII for the neck any opinionson this combo good and bad would be appreciated,this is not an easy choice all the sound clipps sound great........thanks again

I have a C-5 and a PGn in my #1 LP and your choices are not far from that. You'll end up with a killer sounding LP, no doubt about it.

Yea,Racer I have thought about it and a dozen other combos,like the proII's, neck and bridge,or the seth lovers sound like they could work. as far as the sound clips go, over the computer they all sound great, decisions,decisions.Thats why I would like to here some opinions.

that sounds like a sweet combo. and like robert said it's not far off from what he has in his *#1* LP (that means good :) ) but anyway i haven't heard of this combo before on the board so go for it!!!! and post what you think of it... (it's going to sound kick ass no matter what) there's no dought you'll love it

It's called the "flavor of the week" syndrome. It will be there sometime :D

I like the c5 a lot. It has transparency, therefore it's versatile, like a 59b, but it has more bottom end and power. It is well balanced and does not have that annoying compression/overtone that you can get with high output pickups.

Couldn't have said that better,,,think the Full Shred will ever get a week? I have the Seymour humbucker CD and it sounds very rich on there yet no one raves about it here.

I think it's a matter of nuance and also of getting exactly what you want. I have ordered a LP with an ebony neck and requested a AII pro / CC combo for that guitar. My rig tends to be a bit bright, and I wanted something to give me a warm musical tone from my guitar. My experience in the past with AII magnet pickups has been really good. So I decided to try the above combo. I can't give you my personal review yet as I haven't gotten the guitar, but Scott_F recommended me to that particular combo. I have a PRS with a C5 in the bridge as well. The C5 is really nice for bottom end, and has a really wonderfull "PAF on steroids" type tone (scooped mids). It is a bit bright through my rig (and on my sensitive 30 year old ears) so I usually turn down the tone to 8. If you like a bit of warmth, I would go with the AII pro and the CC. If you want more crispness and big bass, try the C5 and 59. Jumble as appropriate.

your choices will sound wonderful .. i own both those pups and are thrilled with them .. the A2P n has remarkable clarity without a hint of sterileness or brittleness .. splits nicely and SINGS for overdriven leads ..

This is a great desciption of the C5. I like the fact that I get a good bottom end, a slightly rolled off top end (I hate "ice pick in your ears" treble like the EMG 81), a lot of power and some clarity.

Don't know about the C5, but the APHII has been my go to neck pup in Les Pauls ( and everything else) for 10+ years. My favorite all time neck bucker for everything from Jazz/Blues to hard rock.

I really have to try a C5 at some point.

Depends what you want. The C-5 is fairly transparent and clear, but the pickup just didn't have the thickness and growl I like so I ended up removing it. It might be perfect for you! Try it.

Doesnt the C5 sound alot liek the bb's?
I hope not,thats the last thing I want .If the BB's werent so thin and harsh(to my ears) they sound like they could've made a good vintage pup,very airy and open,but just too harsh for my tast.So I went and ordered the C5 and the pro II's,will post some opinions once I put'em in.

The C-5 sounds exactly like the BB....that's why I removed it.


Hehe, just kidding. Seriously, the C-5 has a similar EQ to the BB Pro to my ears but the highs are a little fatter and smoother, while the over all tone is beefier and thicker. It is airy and open but thicker than the BB Pros.

I personally ended up with the Rio Grande BBQ because I like the tone a little fatter and with more thick mids.

sounds to me like i would hate it then? from what i remember you tried a C5 in a les paul right?

well i would not even want to think how crappy it would sound in my ibanez then! :rolleyes:
