I have a CARVIN sc90(neckthru-alderbody-mapleneck-ebonyfretboard)---It has a C5(bridge)---I also tried a JB(I took it out & put c5 back)

--I just bought a PEARLYGATES(bridge) for $40. ebay.---Should I switch the c5 for PEARLYGATES??(bridge position)--It's kinda alot of work just to see I dont like it(the PearlyGates, that is...)

--Which pickup do YOU think would sound better??? The c5 or P.Gates??

-I dont have as much experience as alot of you guys & I could really use your advice---

---THANK YOU in advance!!----------------------

-I play THINLIZZY, MSG, MEGADETH,FRIEDMAN(solostuff), TALICA, UFO, etc..

I'd rather have a PG than a C5...but that's me. I love the PG and don't love the C5! The C5 is hotter though, and has more output if that's what you're after. Both can be a little bright to some ears. What's your neck pickup? Lew

You know, with that C5 as the bridge pickup, you might like that PGb as a neck pickup. Lew

Re: C5 or Pearly GATES for CARVIN--bridge???

-The NECK pickup ia an ALNICOPRO II(neck)-----doesn't sound that great w/c5----BUT, I've never had good luck w/both pickups at once--I use Bridge or Neck, never BOTH...

Re: C5 or Pearly GATES for CARVIN--bridge???

The PGB might be a great pickup in the neck! I once had a PGN that was wound about .7K over specs and it sounded GREAT!

That's a shame. Combining the neck and bridge pickups is usually a great tone for rythym playing unless all you use is a semi-distorted or distorted tone.

If you're after a stronger tone from the neck pickup, try that PGb as a neck pickup...it's actually wound to about the same specs and has about the same output as a 50's Gibson paf.

--So, I think I'll put PEARLYG. in the NECK & keep c5 in BRIDGE--the c5 just sounds too good to change----I realized this after last night jammin--c5 is a keeper!!

Me too, but never, ever in a Carvin, no matter what woods are used. The neck through construction combined with a thin neck carve and the dual carbon rods inside the neck (aside from the truss rod) make for a bright, focused tone that begs for a warm high output pickup to be used in the bridge.

Personally, I'd keep the C5 in the bridge and put the PGb in the neck. In faact, I might go so far as to suggest you put the APH's magnet in place of the C5's alnico V bar and make your pickup into a CC. I have a PGb/CC set up in my Carvin and I couldn't be happier. That's one combo that's never coming out.

--it doesn't nail "TakenoPrisoners"(Megadeth)--not like when I had my JB in there, OH WELL!

--I definately appreciate any&all comments!

The CC is going to have rounder highs, looser lows, and a lot more low mids. All of this combines to give the CC a fuller. bigger footprint than that of the C5.
