C8 vs. Custom: Clarity and Brightness Comparisons...

Gooch

I've narrowed it down to these two pickups to replace my WLH in my LP Trad Pro, which is on the heavy and sometimes bright side depending on the amp and speakers. I have both the regular Custom SH-5 and the Custom 8; here are my experiences below...

--I have a Custom in a Schecter PT Tele. It's a bit 'strident' with my Splawn, but kicks ass. Tight and dependable.

--C8 in another Schecter PT. Compared to the Custom, it is still big and bold, but less strident, and I feel like somewhat less clear/articulate, but still great.

--C8 in a Lone Star Strat. The C8 seems to be clearer in this guitar than in the heavier/denser PT above. It may be my favorite version of the Custom/C8 out of the three guitars.

SO...I'm looking for recommendations on which to try first... I'm NOT a big magnet swapper and I can purchase a C8 online today. My Les Paul tends to be on the bright side, so I'm leaning toward the C8. My Les Paul has 500k pots.

Cheers, gang!

What kind of music are you playing?

Ah, good question. Rock, Hard Rock, some early metal ala Zeppelin, GNR, Rage, Metallica, Tool... I play rodded Marshalls ala Splawn and others.

+1

Definitely the C8 if your LP is already on the bright side. The Custom (with ceramic mag) is very bright with a piercing, brittle high end. The C8 has smoother highs and a big bold sound keeping the character of the Custom.

Thanks, dudes. Yes, my LP is pretty clear, bright, and cutting so the C8 should be perfect in this application!
