Cab recommendations for a 1 watt tube amp?

So my Randall RD1C is gonna be here any second now, and I was wondering what would be compatible with this lil 1 watt? I read that you can have the cab rated for double the wattage of your amp but I can't find any 2 watt cabs lol will it be ok to use a 35 watt cab? Or maybe a 65-watt? I know all about ohms but I'm a lil confused about wattage ratings. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Do you have anything to try right now? Just match up the impedance and see. Don't expect a lot and you'll likely be happy. For most tube amps you want the speaker to be able to handle any spikes above the rated wattage. In your case it won't matter. I'm dying to know what this sounds like when you get it. Please report back.

Also the higher the efficiency rating on the speaker, the louder you will perceive the volume.

I'm off to work now so I won't be able to let you know how it sounds until this evening. Im just nervous that the little 8" stock speaker in it isn't gonna have that tight low end I'm looking for. Oh well trial and error pretty much right?

What low end the stock speaker has should be tight, but I wouldn't expect much of it. The double wattage mark you cite in your first post is a minimum; you can certainly use a more powerful speaker if you want. The only potential drawback is that the amp may not be able to push the speaker hard enough to really sound its best.

For example this past weekend I played my Egnater Tweaker (15W) through a 2x12 cab loaded with Eminence Wizards (75W each) that I usually use with a 100W Marshall. The Tweaker didn't sound as big or as full as the Marshall, but it still sounded damn good.

I would think that a 1X12 cab with a decent low watt speaker like a Greenback should sound just fine.

I've run my 1 watter (Blackstar) through two V30's and a 400 watt 4x12. Sounds fine in either configuration. But I prefer it through the stock 8 inch speaker. There's a really lo-fi greasiness to one watt and small speaker that just works...especially with a Tele style guitar.

Like a big ole greasy steamin plate of enchiladas. Yum. Cervaza chaser

Re: Cab recommendations for a 1 watt tube amp?

This thing is amazing I cant stop playing it. Im not to thrilled it didn't come with a box, but I did buy it "open box" I didn't think that meant without a box lmao
The bass response is nice and tight, and I'm blown away by the power of this Randall vs the cube 20gx I have. This thing pushes some air!

Re: Cab recommendations for a 1 watt tube amp?

I have a 1-watt mode on my amp and I've used 2x12's and 1x12's without a problem. 75-watt, 80-watt, and 100-watt speakers work just fine.
There is very little difference between one tube watt and seven tube watts: they'll push a big cab just fine.

Re: Cab recommendations for a 1 watt tube amp?

I once tried the Blackstar 1 watt tube combo with a Dime 4x12. Sounded nice.

Re: Cab recommendations for a 1 watt tube amp?

I have four amps between 1-5 watts and I use them with all sorts of cabs without issue. The only time you will really have to be concerned (provided the impedence is good) is if you are playing in a band situation, where the lack of headroom and wattage will work against you. In that situation, you want the most efficient speakers you can find. I found that, for gigging, two Eminence Wizards and two Swap Thangs used with two 2W amps gives me sufficient volume to cut at a small gig while still sounding like fully cranked amps...

Re: Cab recommendations for a 1 watt tube amp?

I would look for a 1x12 with a V30 or V30 clone speaker. I have the randall rd5c and I got the best tone out of it with a Hughes & Kettner 1x12 cab.

Re: Cab recommendations for a 1 watt tube amp?

My friend runs his RD1 through a Mesa Mini Rectifier 1x12 and it sounds SICK.

The thing about higher-powered speakers like Vintage 30's is that they often like being pushed a little by loud amps to sound their best, but, quite honestly, his sounds just fine at low-ish volumes with the RD1, IMO.

I run my RD5 combo with a Celestion G10 Greenback which is an early-breakup speaker which *supposedly* gets along better with lower-wattage amps, and, quite honestly, the Mesa V30 1x12 sounds noticeably better.

I've got a VOX AC4TV that works well with a V30. I did the Bitmo mod on it to give it more headroom. I think depending on what kind of volume you want and sound you want is important. And if you are using it to jam, record or just practice with. My little 4 watt amp is fun jamming with a drummer and bassist. Not very clean but still loud enough to jam with.

Re: Cab recommendations for a 1 watt tube amp?

4W with a 97dB speaker is pretty good, but with every 3dB of sensiivity you effecively double your wattage. So, 4W with a 97dB speaker becomes an effective 16W with a 103dB speaker ...
