Cab Tolex & Grille Cloth Options

Here is my current avatar cab loaded with 2x12 greenbacks:

I didn't pick that color scheme, I bought used. But this is the color scheme I want:

I really trust my speakers, and they are worn in quite well. And I just got off the phone with avatar, and its ~$300 for a new cab, and ~$460 for a fully loaded cab with new greenback speakers. I could probably sell my cab for $300 loaded.

Long story short, what are my options for changing the appearance of my cab to the salt&pepper marshall type cab?

they sell the several styles and colors of tolex and grill cloth. They have black British style for about $18/yd. And Salt&Pepper grille cloth for $37/yard

interesting, how difficult would it be to redo the tolex? I wouldn't rip off the burgundy, I would just put the black on top

I know a guy in Gary IN that could probably do it for you, He builds&repairs guitars and builds custom cabs. he's repaired two of my guitars and built me a custom cab, and does a lot of them for people in the area. His name is Bob Owensby, Runs 219 Guitar Works, he can order the tolex and cloth from his supplier for a lower cost.

Just called him, said he only deals with wood type finishes, would not touch tolex. Wish he would tho, Gary isn't that far from me, and I'd have him retolex my amp head too...

Re: Cab Tolex & Grille Cloth Options

I just posted about Grill Cloth a few days ago. I built a new baffle for a large, unknown, cheap cab and did the grill cloth myself. It wasn't that bad. But Tolex, aside from covering flat panels, I've never done it. Check the link if you decide to try it yourself. There is some info on installing the grill cloth. https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?287596-Grill-Cloth-any-tips

I checked out your thread. thanks. I've never done anything remotely like this, so I'm not sure I can do a clean job

I don't blame you. It's a nice cab. Mine was a garage sale find. Biggest problem with having it done is if you have to ship it. That will really kick the cost up. You may end up better off, money wise, by selling it and getting Dave at Avatar to make you a new one in the colors you want.

yeah that's very true. I'll have to chip in about $150 to do so. I am hoping just to sell the empty cab and buy another empty cab, then I'll only have to chip in about $70, which is roughly the cost of the new materials, so I'm quite happy with that method. The problem is, who wants a burgundy 2x12 avatar cab?

Re: Cab Tolex & Grille Cloth Options

I think the Burgundy looks good, actually. I would have preferred a different grill cloth with it. To me, that grill cloth (wheat?) is just too bright. But really, just give me a black cab with a classic or understated cloth ... salt and pepper, silver weave or just plain black. I actually have two Avatars as well, both black with silver weave cloth. I think a black and tan, or maybe even just black grill cloth would look good on that cab, IMO.

I have a marshall head (black and gold, standard marshall) so thats why id like the cab to somewhat match. it doesnt look bad as it, but it could look better as you said. I think the easiest method would be to sell and rebuy, I don't think swapping the tolex would be easy

Re: Cab Tolex & Grille Cloth Options

I don't think Tolex looks that hard to do, but it would take some experience. First time may be a mess. So yeah, I probably wouldn't do it. Mess up and resale value is gone.

You may not like the color, but that Avatar is a nice cabinet. I wouldn't risk messing it up changing the Tolex with little or no experience. I've done a bit of tolex work and it's not THAT hard, but you need to develop the knack, and there's no way you'll get that cab back to being as nice as it is now as a first-time tolexed. BTW, you can't put the black over the burgundy; it will look weird and the corners won't fit.

Find a buyer who likes that cabinet the way it is, and buy a new one from Avatar or Mojo.

Re: Cab Tolex & Grille Cloth Options

I didn't know he only did wood finishes, I saw you were in Chicago so that's why I threw the recommendation out

Re: Cab Tolex & Grille Cloth Options

I called a few places in Chicago, they weren't willing to touch it. Oh well...

Thanks gents. I'm in no rush so I'll take the path of least resistance. I won't mess up the tolex of the burgundy. I'll either sell the cab as is or empty it out. I'll keep the speakers if necessary, I like them anyway.
