Cab wiring question parallel or series?

Hi all,

I purchased a used nesa 4x12 cab, and the previous owner wired in two cl80's to go along with the v30s that are stock.

Im paranoid about making sure in matching correct impedances when using my amp eith this cab. Ive upmoaded some photos and if someone with experience could fill me in on what type of wiring this is, that would help me out a lot.

Thank you!

Each speaker is rated at 8 ohms, and the previous owner claims that i need to set my amp to deliver 8 ohms to use the cab safely.

Re: Cab wiring question parallel or series?

From the pics, it looks like each pair of speakers is wired in parallel, which would put each pair at 4 Ohms. For an 8 Ohm overall wiring, they would have to be wired in series. I can't tell if that's the case at the switch plate - can you get a clearer picture of that?

Rather than getting people to guess or do the work for you, get a multimeter and measure the cab in person. That way you learn how to do it yourself.

Re: Cab wiring question parallel or series?

And just in case you're not familiar with measuring it w/ a meter:
1) insert a speaker cord in it's input jack.
2) measure the DC resistance on the other end of the cord from tip to barrel
3) DC resistance is on the order of 2/3 to 3/4 of the impedance, so an 8 ohm cab will read ~ 6 ohms on the meter; a 4 ohm impedance ~ 3 ohms; 16 ohms ~ 12 ohms. Don't be overly concerned about the 'exactness' of the reading....it's a multiple choice answer.

Re: Cab wiring question parallel or series?

The previous owner likely just swapped the two speakers and kept all the wiring the same. (8ohm mono)

Re: Cab wiring question parallel or series?

It's most likely wired in series/parallel, 2 sets of 8 ohm speakers in parallel then those pairs are in series with each other. The series part is done with switching jacks on the jack plate.

As has been said, the safest way is to plug a cable in and check it with a meter.
