Cabinet emulators instead of amps?

Just saw this video for ADA GS-2 Cabinet emulator DI box...

I pretty much just play through a clean amp with a pedalboard anyway, so I'm wondering if something like this or the Sansamp GT-2 would be essentially be the same thing.

Could someone effectively sell off their amps and just use one of these and still sound good live or at band practice? Is that their purpose?

They'll all tell you its not the same thing, but its up to you to decide. An amp-mimicking dirt pedal, a reverb box for a little dimension and a powered PA speaker my be all you could want, and you can get amp pedals for a fraction of the cost of the amp theyre emulating.
Its also easy buy in instead of buying amps.

This goes into the effects loop of your amp. You'll still need a load on your amp if you've got a tube amp. (I wonder if this is emulating any specific power amp.) Then you output this to the FOH / PA and it's like a mic'd up amp.

I do the same thing in software, but this could be a handy gadget for some people.
