Cable Question.....

So I have used all Mogami Golds up til this point. I have a few new pedals coming and was given (2) Kirlin 6" patch cables with the purchase of one of my pedals which have silver connectors. Having said that, I have read mixing gold and silver connectors is a bad idea, however, I don't recall the reason that was given. Is it true or am I ok to use a mix of both cables? Here is a link to the free patch cables I got with my order for those who are interested.... http://www.kirlincable.com/product_show.php?id=692

Re: Cable Question.....

I remember reading the issue was regarding oxidation, unlike metals rusting quicker than like metals when in contact with eachother. Not sure if its true.

Re: Cable Question.....

the cables don't touch each other

a gold one on one input of a pedal and a silver on the output
would never come into direct contact

some metals, aluminium and stainless steel for example
create oxidation when they come into contact
we use SS screws into an aluminium block on the lasers at work
they react to each other and self lock

gold and silver sit together on jewelry all the time

having both in a signal chain would cause no issues to be concerned about

I find some internet myths to be amazing

Re: Cable Question.....

Yeah, "the colors clash" is probably the extent of it. Mixing silver and gold is a fashion faux pas, I guess.

Re: Cable Question.....

I think he meant the plug material not the conducting wire material inside the cable, from the link it looked liked the conductors are copper. I mean color wise gold vs silver

I would guess its gold plated vs nickel plated & their use in sockets that make or make not be gold plated, rather than using gold or silver wire conductor. Man you'd need a dog 24/7 to guard the pedalboard thats using silver & gold cables lol

Re: Cable Question.....

lets see

brass and SS bond when they contact
that's why nickel plated brass is used in tire valves

gold plated plugs into nickel plated or silver plated jacks
are not really an issue

Re: Cable Question.....

I have never heard this, and it sounds like absolutle nonsense to me -- and I work in high end audio where there is a LOT of snake oil. I have heard just about every knuckleheaded audio myth you can imagine.

Re: Cable Question.....

Seems to last a while..I've got some pretty old cables with jacks that still look plated.

Re: Cable Question.....

The gold plating has been more fragile in my use with plugs that have gold plated tips over the years, constant plugging in out of the guitar seems to cause this. Maybe its the colour that shows the wear than the silver ones. Well i dont think its truly 'gold' as in aurum that they use for plating, probably an alloy of somekind like say with when nickel/silver fretwire doesnt really have silver in it. So could be the material on some plugs is different composition & not as robust as plain old nickel. The worst offenders i've come across are the brass plugs, those literally smell of rust but i've not used them long to find out if they rust like iron rods.

I don't see how a gold plug would rust if in contact with nickel plated contacts, gold, real gold doesnt really rust for ages. Well i dont have any real gold that i,ve worn for ages to say for sure lol

I do remember reading about it though, don't know if its true but thats all i read about mixing the two in regards to negative effects.

Re: Cable Question.....

As everyone else has said on here, it's malarkey. The gold and silver don't come in contact and so there's nothing to worry about. It might have been started a salesman to sell more gold or nickel plated patch cables, honestly.
