Cables - for the hundred and forty-leventh time

I wrote a very long, mostly correctly spelled post about cables and connectors an hour or more ago and, as I seem to do with increasing frequency lately, I left the forum before posting it. Either that or it was nuked in its infancy. I hate it when that happens.

This is now the abbreviated version since I have moved forward with purchasing a batch of twenty GLS Audio 1/4" Pancake Right Angle connectors.

Please suggest your preference for cables to be used to patch together pedals on a pedal board. I do not want pre-manufactured patch cables as I will make them to fit. They will be soldered.

Goals:
1. Low Capacitance (I suppose)
2. Low Noise
3. High RF Rejection
4. Maximum OD .275" (7mm)
5. They must improve my playing by a minimum of 12-1/2%.

Thank you in advance.

george L and a quart of whiskey

Re: Cables - for the hundred and forty-leventh time

I prefer them to be Stegosaurus Orange.

It's funny you should mention George Ls. Exactly 1/2 of the two cables I soldered successfully using Lava 229 right angle male connectors was with George L .225 cables.

What is the best whiskey to drink for getting Eric Johnson violin tones on soldered George L cables?

Since it is already stocked in my pantry I may try this.

Re: Cables - for the hundred and forty-leventh time

Dumb question, have you tried out the pancakes on all your pedals? Some of my top mount jacks won't take a pancake with a 9V adapter.

Right now I have a combo of Lava Cable and Hosa. Seems good. I probably overpaid for the Lava.

Re: Cables - for the hundred and forty-leventh time

I probably overpaid for the Lava.

Specifications on many Lava cables look good ... particularly with respect to capacitance. Yes, I have looked at all the physical issues and I have some Neutric connectors for the one instance where I need a little more stand-off to pass over a power adapter, and I will use two more where I need additional clearance so that the cables can go straight down and not hit the pedal board.

A few things are subject to change if my Skreddy Echo ever arrives and I prefer it over the El Cap.

Re: Cables - for the hundred and forty-leventh time

all my cables are made out of this stuff with either switchcraft or GLS connectors.

It is pretty thick tho and a really tight fit into the GLS connectors, but damn near indestructible. Here are the other ones on offer if you want other colours or something thinnner. They also sell canare, evidence and george L:

save the page...there are many other options on there too and its all well priced.

I've been looking at the Mogami stuff. They have 3 grades- silver, Gold, and Platinum.
The Platinum cable is costly, but not exhorbitant. run of 12-15 feet works best for my purposes. I am going to give it a go.

THOSE ARE AMAZING. I WISH I HAD WAITED TO PULL THE TRIGGER. Thank you so much for the link. That is amazing stuff there.
I think I'm still gonna buy some and test it against the Lava and Mogami stuff I bought earlier.

Re: Cables - for the hundred and forty-leventh time

just be aware that the covered cable stuff i linked you is pretty thick. Thicker than what you specified.

Re: Cables - for the hundred and forty-leventh time

I have used Lava cable with the mini right angle plugs because they are the lowest profile and I *always* need the pedalboard real estate. They can be a little tricky to work with as they tend to be stiffer and you have to be careful with them.

If I wasn't trying to conserve space, I like the Mogamis, they have always worked well for me.

I purchased some of the CA0446 that is .280 OD without the braided exterior and will compare it to the .305 OD Lava ELC I bought for guitar to pedal board and pedal board to amp.

I also bought some CA-0393 which is .236 which I will compare with the Mogami "Gold" 2524 that I purchased for the patch cables on the board.

Edit: On second thought, whaddaya bet I can sneak that .280 cable into my pedalboard connectors that by specification will only accept up to .275 OD cable?

What's 5/1000" among friends?

Let me know how you like it, Jerry. What are you using now?

Well, I bought these. They look to be very low profile and I like that the covers are black!

Re: Cables - for the hundred and forty-leventh time

I use Lake cable (Redco has it) with the nickel versions of those same plugs. Do yourself a favor and use sand paper or scrape and then clean the solder tabs before soldering. And use some flux if you have it. I like the plugs, especially for the price. A little prep makes the soldering easier.

Thanks. I will.

Re: Cables - for the hundred and forty-leventh time

I have also been looking at doing my own cables, and have done a bit of research.
That is a good link gibson175, thank you.:bigthumb:
I am going to use the CA-0446 cable they sell. The specs are very good:
95% braided copper shield
100% PVC shield
20 AWG center conductor
20 pF per foot = 65.62 pF per Metre
.280" OD
and at $.69 a foot! The only question is..... what color?:scratchch

Yeah, that stuff really looks good. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of mine.
