Cakewalk questions from a recording newbie

Ok, I've loaded the software, loaded the POD software, updated it, and connected and updated the POD. I set the input to Midi Omni (recommended by the Cakewalk Help) after trying using "Stereo Line 6 " input unsuccessfully. Instrument is "Line 6 Pod xt Live." I named the first track "Guitar 1" and armed the track. I pressed record, and it picked up nothing. The POD is connected via USB cable, which, according to the manual (pp. 2-1 & 3-7), will work for recording.

Now, how do I get Cakewalk to recognize and record it?

Midi Omni won't help you (the POD is an audio device, not a MIDI device). You should see these in your track input list: "Left Line6 PodXT", "Right Line6 PodXT", and "Stereo Line6 PodXT". If you're not using stereo effects on the track, pick either left or right, otherwise pick stereo. Do not select an instrument (this does not apply when recording audio).

A couple things to check out:

- When you plug the Pod into your USB port, does Windows recognize it? (a bubble will appear on the bottom right indicating it was found)

- Is the output on the Pod turned up?

Ok, source and port are set to the POD.

Ouput is turned up.

The POD is recognized by Windows.

Still no sound, and nothing is recorded.

As I said, I'm a PC recording NEWBIE.

Also, how can you open MP3 files in Cakewalk? I figured out how to open WAV files, but not MP3.

Try this with the Pod plugged into the USB:

1. Go to Control Panel and switch to Classic view if you haven't already done so
2. Double click "Sounds and Audio Devices"
3. Click the Audio tab
4. Set "Default Recording Device" to "Line6 PodXT"
5. Click the Volume button under the recording section
6. In the window that appears, make sure all the levels are turned up, then close it.
7. Uncheck "Use only default devices" back on the sound panel
8. Click OK
9. Restart CW, and set up a new track for recording as described previously.

Also, how can you open MP3 files in Cakewalk? I figured out how to open WAV files, but not MP3.

I don't think you can. You will have to use another program to convert MP3 to WAV. Someone else would be better able to tell you which program to use, because I've never done that.

Are you able to record audio using the PC's sound card? Try plugging the Pod's left output into the sound card's mic port, or use a mic, or whatever you have lying around. Set the track input to the left channel of your sound card, arm the track, and let 'er rip. Try with and without the Pod plugged into USB.

OTOH, I just figured out that by leaving the USB plugged in, I can hear files from WMP through the headphones from the POD.:cool3:

Well, at least we know the Pod works as a playback device.

Let's look at this from another angle - can you try recording from the Pod using Windows Sound Recorder, and see if that works?

what version of cakewalk are you useing? Cakewalk for guitar 2 only suports Wav. files. Cakewalk for Guitar 3 supports Mp3. If you have a program like Musicmatch? you can convert mp3's to wav.s and bring them into the program.

Indeed. I would still like to see the results of recording from the sound card to determine if this is a Pod issue, or a Windows issue.

it is - your problem is the pod (and who told you to use midi? /jackie childs)

if you have something called a MASIO driver, you'll might need that in order to get the audio to make it from the pod to the cakewalk via usb ... right now, you are telling cakewalk to look for something that your computer isnt seeing if you are not routing audio to/from usb

if you set the CW input to the soundacard and use the audi outs of the pod, i bet it'll work




AND we have to focus on the CW output too ... you have to configure the CW OUTput to where you expect it to go - (back to the pod enroute to speakers from the pod's line out? the soundcard to your computer speakers?) ... your tidbit about hearing WMP's through the POD headphones is a clue here

First off, with regards to the ASIO driver, the PodXT install would have put that down (unless it failed or was done improperly).

Second, if Les followed the steps in post 5 without encountering problems, he would have set the PodXT to be the default audio device, which would suggest to me that Windows can recognize the Pod as a recording device.

Anyway, we'll figure it out.
