cali15 probs

Howdy,

i have a california 15 ceramic since january and got some probs.
i don't want to throw mud on that product, but some style sounds awesome
and some is reproduced awful. i does produce some unpleasant resonance
spots on the A and high E string if i determine that correctly.
Is there a way getting rid of them?
Does it need longer brake in? Different cabinet perhaps? (currently birch open back). surface coating?

cheers, Martin

Re: cali15 probs

The Cali is a pretty stout speaker and takes a while to break in. There are various ways to speed up that process. The other problem may be be the use of the aluminum dust cap; kindy spikey to my ears---you might want to consider asking Ted for a paper dome. Doping the surround may calm down some cone cry, but I haven't noticed that in these types of speakers very much. I have the same Weber Cali 15" ceramic speaker and I think it sounds better with a paper dome...but I'm not a huge fan of the JBL tone.

Re: cali15 probs

ok, thanks. so i'll stay patent. i thing it should brake in thru playin loud guitar.
dope would make it sound even more dry - right?
do you think it would be worth the try to mod the cabinet to be sealed instead of open back?

Re: cali15 probs

I think what Ted had in mind when he was building that speaker was a D130F, a bright, clean speaker that is probably best used with a pretty clean amp...the problem of a high string buzz/resonance won't be affected much with a sealed cab. I think it has more to do with the aluminum dome; under gain they get kinda fizzy. Doping might calm the speaker down if what you are hearing is 'cone cry', like what you get with some Celestions. Break it in and see what happens---try running the Grimm Robe demos through it for about a week.

Re: cali15 probs

signal is very clean and alu dome is basically what i wanted for some styles.
i'll try breaking it in and tell ya what's the result.

@dope - i do not know where to buy it. if i don't get it done without, i rather sell the cali
