California 50's

Is it possible to adjust the pickup poles (by pushing them in or out) on the California 50's for better string to string balance without destroying them?

Re: California 50's

In all likelihood you'll destroy them; the magnet rubs the easy-to-break windings directly. Only safe on some single coils where plastic bobbins are used...

If you really must, it's possible to mask the pickup off and grind the pole pieces down, but there's risk of metal shavings attaching themselves to the pickup (so you should try to blow it off with compressed air and/or dab the pickup with some masking tape after,) and if you use too much heat that can de-stabilize the insulation on the coil wire and lead to issues.

Re: California 50's

Thanks. That's what I needed to know.

Not interested in grinding the pole pieces for the reasons you stated.

Re: California 50's

the ssl2 is basically the ssl1 (the pups in the california set) with flat poles if it really bothers you. i have plenty of staggered pole pups (texas hots, surfers, twangbanger, ssl1, aps1 off the top of my head) that i use on guitars with 9.5" to 16" radius fingerboards. in a live situation, no one will hear the difference. probably not even you.

Re: California 50's

I always go with flat poles if I have a choice, but I agree here: pickups have been destroyed by trying to flatten the poles. If you don't notice a difference, don't worry. But on some guitars, with some pickups, I certainly hear a balance problem. So for those, I always go flat.

Re: California 50's

The summaries say the flat pole strat pickups have more output than their staggered counterparts?

Re: California 50's

I would never trust any bar graph to be a realiable measure of output.

And I certainly wouldn't trust anything like that on the website since the disastrous redesign

Re: California 50's

The bar graph labeled output.
It's wrong, of course, as most data published after August 1st, 2015, D-Day for Duncan's Corporate website debacle.

To this day, the site still is broken. Not to mention the absurd, obscene amount of money lost in the process.

The thing that still to this day I simply can not get head my around it is why and whom put this incredibly important task in the hands of somebody that was more than obvious had not the slightest idea of what she/he was doing and what it's worse, never felt compelled in asking for help when finally the manure hit the fan, nor even crossed her/his mind of keeping a working copy of the old site as a backup, just in case?

Every time I think about this, I just can't do anything but to shake my head in disbelief. :smack: :boggled: :banghead:

Re: California 50's

The output of the flat pole versions of staggered pole pickups is the same- the balance of the strings is better if you use modern strings with a modern radius.
