Calling the 7 string gurus!

So I need help deciding what pup to throw in the bridge of my new ibanez premium rg927. I have my mind set on a cold sweat neck with a nail bomb Alnico 5 bridge, but with a $370 price tag that's got to wait a bit. I do however need something to fill that bridge spot for the time being. I'm looking for something percussive and cutting while not being fizzy. Lead tones take priority. I'm looking for a protest the hero type tone, my band plays in standard 7 string tuning and were a mix on unearth/ carcass type stuff I guess

I play through a boosted Mesa dual recto, and my rhythm guitarist plays a emg 707 loaded agile through a 5150.

I'm looking at the Duncan distortion and full shred, as well as the dimarzio crunch lab, Evo7, blaze custom, and gravity storm. Any suggestions?

Re: Calling the 7 string gurus!

Cannot stand the blaze 7. But I do dig the Full shred 7 string especially if your running a recto that could keep things from getting to thick on you in the wrong places. I'm not a huge fan of the distortion for 7 string work. You'll get a bunch of distortion fans screaming at you that its the hot ticket but most have only used the 6 string version the 7 string version while still the same basic pickup doesnt seem to react the same to the lower tunings. I have an Evo 7 also and i dig the evo pickups but they can be hard to live with sometimes they seem just so finicky to amp settings and pickup attack. Basically when your on its ON! but if your off its OFF! havent tried the others you mentioned so cant help there. I will say this I have a hard time getting along with the Invader in its 6 string version but I love it in the 7 string.

Re: Calling the 7 string gurus!

That's for all the help guys. A lot of people say the crunch lab but I've never played them. My experience with a lot of these pickups has been with the 6 string versions, which I know doesn't always translate over

Re: Calling the 7 string gurus!

agreed. the old original DMZ Blaze is NOT where it's at. bridge or neck. too flat. too sterile. doesn't really accentuate the 7th string very well. too much of a mid-scoop.

been looking at the D Activator 7. can anyone speak to that one?

Re: Calling the 7 string gurus!

I'm actually a member over there as well but I've been here a lot longer and whenever I have a pickup question, I come back home to the Duncan forums

Re: Calling the 7 string gurus!

Blaze 7 bridge model is pretty scooped, IMHO. Had a set in an RG7620. Neck pickup Blaze was cool, though

Re: Calling the 7 string gurus!

While I've barely even played a 7-string, I've had 6-string guitars tuned to B-standard using both the Full Shred and DD in the bridge spot. Both sounded great- DD was more aggressive and perhaps more organic, Full Shred was tighter and more percussive. Either one is a great choice.

The Distortion is a bad@$$ Rhythm Pickup....if lead tones are a priority it

wouldn't be my first pick. The Full Shred is a nice compromise, its good for

rhythm and leads IMO, tight and percussive but still has enough chunk to

not sound thin and is very articulate. The Dimarzio Dactivator would be my

1st pick for your 7 String, like the FS it is tight and percussive. However the

DA has more of a singing sustain on leads compared to the FS probably due

to the fact that it is higher in output. The DA handles any drop tuning and

stays tight. It also has crazy harmonics. Find a used D Activator bridge (not

the D Activator X) on CL or the bay for cheap.

Re: Calling the 7 string gurus!

hey, does anyone know if duncans will even fit in my guitar, considering duncans have square tabs where as the rout in the guitar is those pointed dimarzio tabs?

Re: Calling the 7 string gurus!

Ouch sorry that I dont know my Ibby is an old universe 7 with the pickguard and the routes were more than generous to fit duncans but yours I'm not sure of.
