I would change the pickups in the duo sonic to a custom in the bridge and an ssl6 in the neck.
The alternative is a standard telecaster hh with the custom/jazz combo.
Could a duo sonic play hard rock and metal?
If it can, which guitar and pickup combo would be best?

Either guitar is more than capable of playing any style of music you would like. Play both guitars and see which feels more natural and comfortable for you. My preference would be the HH Tele.

I assume you mean the new Mexican ones, with 24" scale? They sure can and they're very good guitars.

As for an HH Tele vs. HS Duo Sonic... In general play both, the Duo Sonic will probably feel more comfortable and thanks to the thinner body should have better access to high frets. It's really hard to generalize sound differences, but in my experience with 24" scale vs. 25.5" , there will probably be less snap to high notes, but more presence/attack to the bass and a bit more jangle overall. Don't know which neck profile you'll prefer. RE: pickups, I prefer a single in the neck for my own playing, but a Jazz is also a very good pickup and would do well for Metal.

If you decide to go Duo, put a single coil size humbucker in the neck and a hot humbucker in the bridge. Rockin combo.
