Can a loose truss rod be fixed? Need help asap

I just picked up a new guitar everything seems in order besides one issue. There is a bad rattle coming out of the neck. Unplugged it is louder than the strings. I made sure everything was tightened down that did not help. So I decided to remove the neck since the truss rod adjustment is at the neck pickup. I noticed that the wheel wigged when I touched it. Then the whole truss rod slid right out.
I put it back in and shook the neck and sure enough I can hear it moving around in there. It does adjust the tension on the neck but still rattles. I can not even tune it the tuner picks up the rattle.
Is this something that is comon with these types of truss rods? Can it be fixed or am I screwed?

A 'new' guitar as in one with warranty, or a 'new to you guitar'. If its the former then I think you know where it should be headed.

If 'old' then you'll probably need to invest in some silicone gap filler, smear that on the rod and re-install (and cross fingers).

Oops new to me forgot to mention that. I have read about using silicone, foam or wood glue. But wasn't sure if the rod came apart from the anchor at the headstock if it even has one. I am new to messing with truss rods just started adjusting my own a few months back.
