Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

I bought a used Dimarzio PAF (great pups) and the guy who sold it to me didn't mention that the screw holes were stripped!
Is there a way to fix this? Thanks. - Rob

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

I've done it a couple of ways. One is to use some JB Weld to make the holes smaller. I've used solder to do much the same. You can also use the JB Weld to stick a nut that fits the srews to the mounting tabs on the pickup.

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

yeah i use jb weld to do just that 2nd thing you said, put a nut that fits the screw on the pickups ear things. they work fine, but everytime i take my pickups out they seem to break. they probably break once inside, but it still works fine because its just getting loose, but the weld is still around it and holding it well. am i doing something wrong that making it detatch?

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

I have not done this myself, but the question has arisen before:

Perhaps you could turn the pickup over, and rest the metal tab on a steel surface. Then, using a prick punch...lightly tap two or three "divots" adjacent to the stripped hole.

These divots may expand enough metal toward the stripped hole to actually make the hole smaller.

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

Thanks for the help guys. What is, and where can I get, JB WEld? - Rob

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

JB Weld is a permanent epoxy. You can get it at pretty much any auto parts store.

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

JB Weld, its duct tapes liquid equivalent. Fixes anything.

I bet Macgyver owns stock in JB Weld. If you are impateint like me, there is also JB Quick that sets in 4 minutes.

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

I solder nuts to the tabs; I bought a box of 100 from McMaster-Carr for something like $5; you need #3-48 brass. I had a lot of guitars that direct-mounted the pickups and I was always drilling the tabs out; using the nuts let me resell pickups that I'd drilled.

Yeah, I got a pickup from you at one point and it works really well. I was wondering what size that nut was and where to get them. Thank you!

+1

I screw down the pickup height adjustment screw all the way into this brass nut which I place underneath the pickup's mounting leg. I make sure the screw is centered in the oversized hole of the leg and that the nut is firmly against the bottom of the leg. I then solder (with flux) the brass nut to the underside of the leg and once the job has cooled, I remove the screw. The nut will stay there permanently, the repair job is nice and clean.

how do you solder them together? just with a regular soldering iron and none-electrical solder?

whats that?

i really want to premanantly fix these pickups instead of just doing a temporary solution ever time.

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

are those nuts the ones that work with seymour duncan screws? if they are im getting me a few of those, but arnt they available at places like ACE hardware?

so solder IS strong enough to hold those together? thats good news. im guessing i need to file the plate and nut so that it makes groves in it so the solder sticks better right??

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

All US-made humbuckers (with metal baseplates) use #3-48 screws. I've never seen #3 at any hardware store; smaller than #6, and DEFINITELY smaller than #4 are specialty items.

All you need is to make sure you have a flat surface on the base plate for the nut to rest against. You don't need to 'roughen' it or anything like that.

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

ok i should be fine. i used bigger nuts for mine so i had to use bigger screws. im gonna revert back to the old ways this week thanks to you. thanks so much, the big screws were kinda ugly, and they are amazingly close to touching the pickup, which i assume can do something bad to the sound, just like if you tap it with something metal. do i just put the nut on there, and apply solder all around it so that it sticks? or do i put it under or something like that? (under would be weird and hard to do.

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

I run a screw through a spring, then through the hole and secure the nut on the bottom. The spring pressure keeps the screw straight and centered.

Then heat the nut/baseplate with the iron until it is hot enough to melt the solder (heat the joint, not the solder). The solder then should wick around all sides of the nut. Let it cool for a few minutes and you are done.

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

wow never though about heating the surroundings to that amount of heat than just putting the solder around. pretty smart, but doesnt that take a ****load of time to do? and wouldlnt one side of it cool while youre heating up the other? or do you put the solder on as you finish heating one spot?

Re: Can I fix stripped mounting holes?

wow nvm that was so much easier than i thought. thanks for great advice, now i just have to remake the metal plate at the bottom of my cavity because for some reason my neck pickup doesnt fit perfectly into it like it used to anymore. why do mini-humbuckers have to have those plates?? that pisses me off. or at least mine does, i could just have a threaded insert, but freaken epiphone suck with wood and have those really weird cavity for the neck, and theres a giant hole where one of the inserts should go. i might try and glue a block of wood in there, and than put the insert in there, but is that really the best way to do it??

this is what the neck cavity looks like http://thieery.tr.free.fr/photos/tenonb.jpg

Do you use standard electrical solder?
