I'm looking to buy a strat because I want to get back into blues, prog rock, and classic rock. I know I want that Gilmour tone because it's versatile, but I come from a doom/stoner metal background (think bands like sleep, weedeater, etc.) I know the SSL-5 is pretty hot and mellows out a strat a bit, but would it be able to be meaty enough for C tuning? Muddiness isn't a huge issue, and I'm willing to boost or use a dirt pedal and I would be wiring the bridge pickup to one of the tone knobs to try to cut some high frequencies. Anyway, can the SSL-5 do doom? Open to other pickup recommendations, and yes I know an HSS strat is an option. I really want that position 4 sound available.

Re: Can the SSL-5 doom?

I don't think a standard single coil is going to handle drop tunings very well. A Hot Rails or JB Jr. probably can, depending on your setup. Another interesting choice is the single coil Invader. Its essentially one coil of an Invader, which is a pickup designed for heavier genres and lower tunings.

I think the best choice for you would be to use a full sized humbucker in the bridge, that will widely open your options. You could get an Invader, SLUG, El Diablo, and many others that will handle what you want much better than a single coil will.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. There's a Sterling Sub Silo 3 near me i was thinking of getting. Just want something that will be super versatile and cover everything. I tend to go through moods where I want to play metal, then blues, then back.
