Re: can you cover uncovered pickups?

you can put covers on the duncans, i doubt the stock covers will fit but you can buy covers that will.

Re: can you cover uncovered pickups?

I went to Guitar Center and bought a couple of covers for the exact set up. The holes on the covers were a little bit off. I filed a couple of the holes with a small round file to make them fit. I didn't even border to solder the covers on because the fit was so tight. I virtually had to force the pickups into the covers.

Re: can you cover uncovered pickups?

It is best when covering an open coil to insulate the slug polepieces, I just use a strip of black electrical tape and then push the cover on as tight as possible then solder the cover to the base plate. Pretty simple and it works like a charm. But like Jeremy said, if you want to cover a Duncan pup, get the Duncan cover because they fit properly and they are cheap($12 ea).

Re: can you cover uncovered pickups?

I've done this..FORGET taking your current covers off, trying to unsolder a cover is a major b*tch, all the potting will run out....soldering a new cover ON is about as hard, you have to know what you are doing & have a hot bloody gun. Or, again, you'll just melt everything.

I tried adding a duncan cover & running with it unsolderd but even with the trick JumpMarine (airborne deliver guy, eh?) mentions, I got microphonics under heavy gain/volume.

Best to buy 'em with covers unless you are a soldering expert (I've built 3 amps & a handful of pedals & 3 guitars & I have trouble with pup covers)

Re: can you cover uncovered pickups?

The trick with soldering new covers on is getting the solder to stick to the cover. I suggest just putting the solder on the cover first before putting it on the pickup -- this way you can solder the cover to the baseplate in a snap and thus use far less heat.

Re: can you cover uncovered pickups?

If you put soldering paste on where you want the solder to tin, it will be much easier.
