Re: Can you tell the difference?

I'm listening on a crappy computer, but I think the 1st one is an alder strat with a hot humbucker, and the second one is a cheap LP copy with a similar type humbucker.

Of course, I could be WAY wrong, but that's what it sounds like to me.

Re: Can you tell the difference?

I could never figure this out. There was a good thread comparing alder and swamp ash a couple of months ago where the clips were clean single coil neck pickups. It's surprising how both guitars sounded different. Here it's just a pile of nasty mush.

Sound's like both guitars are being run through some Crate SS amp on the lead channel with everything on 10.

Screamingdaisy, do you own one of each of these tone wood guitars? Perhaps you could help us out here and post up a better sample, i know you got a badass rig so the tone won't be as painful.

Re: Can you tell the difference?

i think #2 is alder. it's brighter, and that's a characteristic of alder as many guys stated here.

or i just heard wrong.

Re: Can you tell the difference?

No. 2 seemed brighter so i say thats alder. Then again ive just got back from a club and have some alcohol in my system. Anyways that is what i went for

I think some of you guys might be getting alder mixed up with ash. Alder is really not that bright. It's brighter than mahagony, yes, but that doesn't make it bright. I think when people think of alder they think of strats becuase that's what it's usually associated with. And single coils are usually on the bright side, so that's why people get the idea that alder is a bright wood, though it's really not...

i could be completely wrong?

And the answer is?.......

1. Mahogany

2. Alder

I'm still waiting for confirmation on what guitars, amp, and cab were used, but both axes were using EMG 81s.....

......honestly, for the most part I just wanted to post this so that people could pick apart the differences, and it seems most people did find them reasonably different despite their flaws (gain levels and quality).

So......seeing as so many people did indeed find the two clips different, the next time someone says that either 1) EMGs make all guitars sound the same, or 2) that they cover up the inherent tone of the wood.....I'm going to tell whoever it is to shove it up their ass.

:fing25:

I'd like to try this again in the furture using clean, mild OD, and heavy OD (though not as much dirt as what these clips used)....but first I need to buy a decent mic for recording.

Re: Can you tell the difference?

Well ****, mayne!

I'm suspicious that the "mahoghany" guitar had some sort of maple component (topped like an LP or Neck-thru maple like a Jackson) added into it, because I'm not used to Mohog sounding that gnashy in the high end.

On the other hand, I found this blind taste test VERY entertaining!

Re: Can you tell the difference?

For all 3 clips, I used my 5150 with the same settings and same mic positioning. All guitars were equipped with an EMG 81 in the bridge. The mahogany clip was done using my ESP Explorer. and the alder was using a friend's Fender Heartfield 'superstrat'.
