Candy Apple Red - Silver/Gold Base?

Which base color would create (all things being equal) a lighter, more orange-ish CAR; silver or gold? Is it possible to generalize how the two bases look? Anyone have example pics?

I am thinking about refinishing an old Telecaster body I have; what I don't want is a darker/purple-ish CAR. Which base color would be ideal for the below look?

Well, the Johnny Marr is literally Metallic KO (not CAR). It looks really good though....I’d start with a top color that is more orange than the CAR one.

I thought I saw a good website showing the differences between the candy colors over silver vs gold, let me search.... either way, good is further from blue than silver is, and it seems that’s what you want.

Thanks- on the other hand, gold is 'darker' than silver to my eyes at least (at the same time as it is also less blue) - So wondering the best way to get both less dark and less blue. Just manipulation of the topcoat? Still curious how each looks, in particular with a light/aged topcoat.

Gold underneath will create a more orangey red. Fender used both, but I forgot which years they used gold and which years they used silver.

The Johnny Marr orange ones are supposed to simulate a faded out candy apple red. But I'm not sure if modern clear red lacquer will fade out in the same way as the older tints, so you're probably best off just spraying clear orange over silver or gold. Use silver for a brighter, colder orange, and use gold for a darker, warmer orange.

I kind of doubt that Metallic KO is actually three stage, but that doesn't mean your equivalent can't be.

P.S. I will be buying a complete Metallic KO Marr Jaguar in the near future. I am going to sell off the electronics/control plates and the neck, and just keep the body, vibrato, and case/case candy...if you are interested.

That's awesome, congrats - Very good taste in the color for sure Wish the Marr didn't use non-standard plates- if it did I'd buy them from you as I still have the standard MIJ plates on mine, and the AVRI vibrato is notably shinier/thicker chrome & metal than the flimsier, dull looking MIJ plates. That's bothered me for a while. Look forward to seeing what you do with the rest of the guitar.

Was hoping to allocate some funds toward a new US offset or project guitar toward the end of this year, but had to pay for a car repair of about the same amount so telling myself to hold off for now. Hoping I feel better about that by the time yours is under way.

The only reason I plan on gutting the electronics is to outfit it like a standard '60's Jaguar, so if it had that already, I wouldn't be selling off the stock wiring at all. I am going to sell the neck, with its respective neck plate, because I don't like the overly yellow tint, and I don't like the signature on the headstock. I'm gonna put on an old-style Jaguar neck (i.e. 7-14" radius), but with an ebony board and real clay dots. Maybe bound, maybe not, but probably not (I already have a mid-'60's-style AV Jag, so I would like to have an early-type one with an unbound board).

I figure that if I buy a like-new used one, or a cheap "new" floor model for $1,200–$1,400, then sell off the neck, neck plate, and stock electronics for $800, I get to keep the orange body and the hardshell case, have a Musikraft neck built to spec for $300–$350, and still come out OK in terms of price.

That's a good plan - I have my Jaguar where I want it, other than *possibly* some less worn Klusons and as mentioned getting better chrome plates. I could replace the pots with full-sized CTS, but don't want to fix what isn't broken either. Wiring is cloth, pickups are SJAG-1s, vintage bridge/AVRI vibrato and I'm very happy with it. Even got a jumbo re-fret (prob. not to everyone's taste on this guitar though.) It sounds the way I always wanted a Jaguar to sound.

That said - there are few times I play it and don't sort of wish I'd got an AVRI instead - just because I like Jaguars so much. AVRIs are much more comfortable to hold (contours,) body is radiused nicer and the nitro feels better/less rigid and cold. One of the things I think is less than stellar on mine and other MIJs, is the inlay work (the black side dots are a bit sunk from the factory) and the fretboard wood, which is very open grained and almost rough. I also prefer the AVRI (or even Squier VM) side dot pattern to the seventies style black dots/beneath the fretboard. The matching headstock is a big reason I was ok with MIJ however - wasn't available on AVRIs at the time (~2002 ?) and plus, I've never seen an MIJ neck with as much flame as mine - sounds/plays good so won't be swapping it

That's not Foto-Flame? It was certainly made in that period, and it's insanely flamey.

I love MIJ Fenders. Nothing to be worried about there.

There was an early '90's C.A.R. MIJ one with a matching head in the music shop right by my high school. I played it scores of times; it's the guitar that made me love Jaguars. I could never afford it, though...then the shop went out of business when I was away in the Navy, so I never got to scoop it up during their closing sale. I finally got one almost 25 years later (the Blue Ice Metallic AV version)!
