So I checked my YT subscriptions earlier & this was amongst them

Can't believe I never heard of her till today, she was a prolific as some of the motown studio guys it's criminal she nor they aren't household names

Re: Can't believe I only learnt about this lady today

She may be less familiar to newer generations of players, I guess. But to us oldtimers Carol has been a household name for a very long time.

Re: Can't believe I only learnt about this lady today

I enjoyed re-hearing about Carole for the ump-teenth time, but wasn't "I Was Made to Love Her" by James Jamerson? There's a ton of great Carole lines to listen to like "Good Vibrations" and so many more....

Re: Can't believe I only learnt about this lady today

I thought IWMTLR was Jamerson also.
While I'm on the dark 4 string side of the forum can I ask you guys can you really get a BF super reverb sounding this good as a bass amp?

There are quite a few songs where she and another artist have claimed to have played on. The biggest was Jamerson, but check this out.

For more about the history of the LA studio scene of her era, buy and watch "The Wrecking Crew". Absolutely fascinating.

I find this quite tragic really, I always thought Jamerson played on the majority of the Motown records & remain to do so but without actually being there in the room at the time, you'll never know 100%.
I can only hope Carol played alternate versions of the same songs (b sides & demos perhaps) at similar times & this is where the confusion lies, otherwise she may be taking credit for a dead guy's work.
Like I mentioned I only recently learnt of her but can already tell that despite both being very talented their style & tones contrasted Carol being tight & punchy while James looser & 'flubbier'
It's a shame her legacy is secure without rightly or wrongly claiming other cuts, I hope that she's genuinely mistaken otherwise it's a pretty rotten way to behave.

Re: Can't believe I only learnt about this lady today

I tend to think that it's not Carole's fault for the discrepancy, but the bass player's mistake from the video posted.

Re: Can't believe I only learnt about this lady today

clicking the link to the letter from slutsky makes me think she is a little off her rocker

Re: Can't believe I only learnt about this lady today

I hope you're right boomer because the alternative is just not cool at all. It sucks when someone influential and talented turns out to be an a-hole.

Re: Can't believe I only learnt about this lady today

She also claims to have played on "Light My Fire", but Robby Krieger has said Larry Knetchtel's - not her - playing ended up on the song.

Re: Can't believe I only learnt about this lady today

I thought Ray's left hand was the bass player, it appears Carol is one for telling fibs.
It's a shame she's only soiling her own legacy

Re: Can't believe I only learnt about this lady today

Ray's left hand was the only bass when they were live. She played on Light My Fire for the Gabor Szabo version of the song.

Don't let a guy trying to sell his book tarnish her reputation. She was a pioneer and one of first of few women to break through that glass ceiling in rock and roll. At over 10K recordings I would hardly call her a liar.

The author contends that the versions she played on were remakes of the orignal hits and therefore don't count. Including Marvin Gaye's Ain't No Mountain, which was a hit all on it's own.

Re: Can't believe I only learnt about this lady today

I just want to mention I only brought that up to defend Jamerson, not attack Kaye. The evidence is not strong in her favor in many of her claims, but that doesn't diminish her skill and influence on the instrument.

Re: Can't believe I only learnt about this lady today

I get defending Jameson, but there were alternate versions done in the same time period of many Motown songs. And there were a lot of bass players during that time. Nothing but respect for all of them, but I think books being sold were more important than the truth.

Re: Can't believe I only learnt about this lady today

I don't mean to sound harsh. I apologize for that. The vast majority of her claims are valid and real. A few of them seem suspect and that writer has used it to tarnish her legacy while promoting his book at the same time. I could be wrong, but that is how it looks to me.
