Capacitor pick for Antiquity Texas hot

Hi everyone,
Got a little bit of a dilemma here,
I've decided to upgrade my stock pups on my 2011 Fender American standard strat to the Antiquity Texas hot pups,
And now I'm playing with the idea of changing the caps from the 0.022 stock to 0.047, not sure if it's the right move,
Is the high capacity going to kill the growling (which I don't want it to)? does anyone got some experience with this combo? any suggestions?

Thanks! :smack:

Btw - the reason I considered that change is because I read that it might make the Strat beefier, and I like the idea :smoker:

Re: Capacitor pick for Antiquity Texas hot

The capacitor only changes the frequency at which the treble is rolled off when the tone pot is turned. For example: if you use a .022uf cap and change the cap to a .047uf cap you will notice that not only the highs but some of the mids will also be lost as you turn the tone down. If you go to a .010uf cap you will notice that only the very upper highs will be lost and you will retain most of the highs and all of the mids as you turn the tone knob.

No cap will make your guitar sound "beefier".

id stick with the .022 for the reasons doc mentioned above

As explained above, moving from 22nF to 47nF would make the tone darker rather than beefier.

If you want more "beef", paradoxically, the best way might be to go for a very low value capacitor: 2,2nF, 3,3nF or 4,7nF (IOW: 0.0022, 0.0033 or 0.0047µF). It would enhance the high mids, exactly like high inductance pickups, albeit with less gain of course...

I've found that certain capacitor values (lower than .022 . . . like around .01) seem to add some volume to a mid rangey frequency when you roll off the tone. I guess you could call it beefier. Am I crazy?

Not crazy because of the resonance peak you are creating.

at that point , I just use the Amp's EQ + try to play some tasty licks

I’ve used the standard .047uf cap with my Ant Texas Hots since 1994. How the tone rolls off has worked well for me. But my Strat was beefy before wiring in the pickups. I believe the body, neck, bridge are significant contributors to that, when compared to my other Strats.
